Well well well, where do you start on this topic? I have been employed as a refrigeration/air conditioning engineer for the best part of 14 years now, and done 3 years self employed, which i am currently. When i was 18 as an apprentice we were given ex post office ldv's with the slidey doors! I have driven most vans during that time. I am a bit of a van geek if you will, as i am always checking out other vans badges etc. to see if anyone has a better van than me!Of the current crop of vans, probably the transit has the most any van can offer. The vivaro and all other variants of it are fine when they are new, good on fuel, and contrary to some cushion style scare mongering, really comfortable to drive, but i would never buy one myself, as they are a fookin nightmare if you are paying the bills yourself.
Modern mercedes still have the age old problem of heavy pedals and the in dash gearchange is not smooth at all.
T5 transporter have harsh engines, but, are solid as fook, but i haven't driven the recent facelift versions.
The most surprising of the modern crop of vans is the citroen relay/fiat clones. you can still tell they are french, but, a friend of mine runs 3, and they have been problem free, except for the usual sticky side door issue they all have.
As for me, i have a 52 vito 112 cdi remapped to 150 bhp/ps, and it has the usual problems of faulty dash, intermitttent central locking, and gearshift issues.
I also have a 52 transit 125 t280 tdci, and the difference between it and the 85/100 non common rail transits is like night and day. Good on fuel, and quiet on the motorway.
I have been seriously considering getting a brand new 140 transporter, but i cannot justify the outlay as yet.

I have had a 08 reg Citroën relay for a month after having a mk6 transit for 2 years. The relay is a better van in everyway.

I paid £5100 for a 08 with 83k and fsh which I think is a damn good price!

Don't think I will go back to a transit until the mk8 is out and all the problems are sorted on them.

Gavin.
