Default Weird AMAL Valve/Idle problem with 3dr

Hi chaps, got a bit of a problem with my 3dr and just wondered if anyone could help?

When the car is idleing, the amal valve starts clicking like mad, which in turn effects the ISCV and makes the car run @ 3000rpm with no throttle, it will also "hunt" about sometimes aswell. If you blip it a couple of times, it will settle for 2secs or so, then the amal valve will start clicking and revs will rise again.

If you unplug the ISCV, it stops, but the amal valve continues to click....

When you are driving it, it boosts fine, and the amal valve never clicks or makes any noise. Its literally when its left to idle.

any ideas?

thanks

What happens when you unplug the amal valve?

I've had a look at the wiring diagram, apparently the Amal valve is connected to Pin 16 of the ECU, and the black and red wire goes to the ISCV. Before the amal valve is clicking i'd suspect that it's working correctly. (but doesn't hurt to check)
If I am correct these things "usually" are operated using a switched earth,.i.e the red/black wire is is +12v all the time and the ECU switches the amal valve via pin 16 which should be negative.
The ISCV/amal valve & TPS ALL share the SAME supply from the fuel pump relay so that must be okay.
1)You have a break in the amal valve wire somewhere and it's operating intermittently
2)The ECU is operating the valve for some reason because it think it needs to (my monies on this one)
3)Related to number 2, faulty component sending the ECU bad signals and making it think it needs to switch the valve.

Also it may be of interest to know that one of the main inputs to the ECU for control of the Amal valve is the MAP sensor, so I'd check this out too. Just also edited to say i forgot to mention the high idle aswell, the MAP sensor should be connected to the TPS at pin 30 i think, so it seems to me like it's the MAP sensor thats duff, but that's my best guess mate.

Make sure you stay away from WOT until your confident that it is fixed mate as that problem can be an engine killer in certain circumstances.

Stu,
In my opinion, the way that IAW relies on WOT to add extra fuel % is a very bad design flaw considering how fragile TPS sensors and wiring are !

Surely gotta be worth a 2nd hand TPS to try?
Or check the wiring at the very least.
If you were closer i'd give you a shot of one.

all you need is a multimeter to check both of these parts (maybe a pump if you want to check the full scale of the map sensor)
i say test both, and that way you'll know 100% you've changed a u/s part

You can use a 2WD TPS instead of the 4x4 one as long as its aligned correctly.

Its only a simple potential divider.

The ecu doesnt rely on actual position as such but more the relative change over time.

No you dont need to swap the wires.
The sensors operate the same way. The wires are swapped only to inverse the signal for the different ecu types if you mix and match the looms/ECU..etc.

4x4 ones are becoming hard to obtain I believe.

If you get stuck I have a 2wd one you can borrow to try on your car if you like?
