Default Calling Carlo BMW Tech Guy Or any other BMW Tech

Wonder if you could help, took my M5 into my local BMW dealer (Note not the supplying dealer) as the engine light came on. The car was running fine and had no apparent faults.

Left the car with 120 miles range on the on board computer, picked it up with 6 mile range and 36 miles more on it They must have ragged it too death to get that down to 6 miles.

My question is this
Is 36 miles acceptable for a test drive?
Do you send data to Germany from the ECU for them to tell you what is wrong if the dealer cannot find any faulty parts? or has the dealer spun me a yarn

Thanks

That's shocking!!! The least they could do was fill the tank back up!

Hi mate it all depends on what test plans they were working through on the diesels it can be that to re generate the particle filter but not normally on a petrol. What did they find with it? if it was lean mixture & they had cleared the fault memory took it a run till the light came on it would have taken a few miles.

All data on the diagnostics gets sent to the tech office now its called fasta data! but if its not under warranty tech shouldnt be looking at it as they arent paying for it so its no use to them unless they ask the technical department for help which is called a puma case!

It is still under warranty; they said the exhaust sensor on one of the banks was the issue. So they swapped it over from one cylinder to another and cleared the codes. Run some tests and the fault did not show up.

They have not changed any parts, but have test drove it 3 times from what the guy on the desk says.

My main issue they ragged my car for 36 miles and left me with a range of 6 miles that went down to 3 miles before i got of the forecourt.

36 mile is a long way to drive is it not ??

it is a long test mate but if they are swapping sensors from bank to bank etc trying to bring the fault on its possible they drove it for a while although they didnt need to rag it at all. Every tech likes a little shot of these cars when they come in its fact but not 36 miles of abuse. As its under warranty they HAVE to work through the test plans & do what ever they say as the tech department / PCS anaylist team check all warranty claims now making sure they are doing everything correct or the claim will be rejected.

It is the issue of the fuel use, i can see someone giving a bit of stick not a issue.

Around Silverstone last year at ford fair i could not have gone from 120- 6 mile and i did 2 sessions and showing 8 MPG

Sent a well worded letter to the dealer.

Thanks for your advice

They most likley had it running with the extraction pipe up the exhausts as well for ages as well as a good runt but your right as well they should see you ok for your fuel. Thing is now with bmw's & warranty if you replace annything without the computer telling you to it wont get paid so dealers are getting tighter with throwing parts at cars 2 year ago if someone seen that sensor faulty it would have been ordered & swapped chancing it but now its different. They will sort the fault tho one way or another if it comes back on.

Its hard to complain against fuel usage if problem takes time testing and mpg will run down even when left idling while the tech looking at your car from underneath or something diagnosing and running through warrenty checklist/procedures.

tbh 120 mile range is not a lot on x5 that run down idling very quickly and 36mile test drive on top i would not say thats unreasonable at all. If you left it with full tank and had it handed back in same amount fuel left then i would say you have cause for concern, but in this case i dont think so

I have had the car now for nearly 2 years, if it says 120 mile range the way i drive it “which is quite quick” and it now says 6 miles they must have given it death!! Fact

Forgot to mention they changed radio to the local chav / drum and bass station, changed my play list on my I pod and changed the memory on the seats.

If i had taken it there with a range of 10 miles i bet they would have charged me for fuel to do the tests, although the car is under warranty.

Does sound a bit excessive to use that much fuel for my liking but thier thirsty cars as well.as for radio stations etc that's a bit out of order, their test driving the car after all,not the stereo.

Most places will charge a fee if the car runs out of fuel so you did right putting enough in,fucking hate pricks who come down my garage on fumes,I leave them out in the carpark if they run out and give them a phone, honestly never had anyone offer to pay for fuel if their cars run out, just think it's funny.we had one trader who bought every car down on fumes and needing a booster pack to start it,soon fucked him off.think u did the right thing bringing it to their attention.
