Default Galaxy 1.9 TDi Loosing power

As title really, bloke at work has got a 2001 1.9 115bhp Galaxy TDi and he says it looses power and just wont pull, he turns the ignition off and back on and its fine, no regular pattern, might not happen in an hour of driving or he may have to restart it 3 or 4 times.
He recons air flow meter, any one experienced anything like this before or think he is right or wrong.
Any help appreciated

Steve

Ye think that what he is saying he thinks it is the air flow meter (mass), he hasnt mentioned the engine management light coming on, and I leant him my OBDII code reader and it isnt showing any faults logged in it

So we have 1 in agreement (maybe lol)

Thats what I thought, so thats why I leant him the meter

If not that what else could cause it and not register a fault ???

could be turbo, worth running a bottle of fuel treatment through it to see if it helps.

But would just turning the engine off and back on again cure that type problem ?

a common fault is the vnt veins sticking with carbon build up, the ecu detects overboost & go's into limp mode, turning the ignition off & back on again resets it.

I guarantee it's either the MAF sensor or the map type sensor (can't think of the proper name). Having sold so many cars with the 1.9TDi VAG that would be my guess. They both won't put the light up on the dash either

Hi Guys, I have a p plate 1.9tdi,old but tidy, its done 200,000miles & is my jukebox transporter,Pulls hard with turbo wine(normal boost noise) up to 3,000rpm,Then power drops out& it will just manage 2,800rpm & looses all pulling power,If I turn key off & on while driving it resets & will pull ok .AS long as I dont try to drive hard or go above 3,000rpm(boost hard)? I have changed MAF & if anything its worse. It has had a new turbo 2,000miles ago.all filters are good & no loss of turbo boost, all pipes are ok. Nothing is comming up when we plug it in on 2 different Dio's Snap On & Bosh
So what is the VNT & where is it? what sensors pick this over boost up & where are they?I dont think its the cat as It will go like a train up in gears & only when its in 4th/5th & getting lots of turbo boost will it go Limp.
I know its just a daft thing as it is working fine all day every day as long as i dont push it.Now well pissed off!?????

Try looking at the live data in VAG-COM, then you may be able to see an irregular signal/figure. Have you done the diesel filter on it?

Don't think they have vnt turbos on those earlier ones?try disconnecting the Maf and see what happens then, maybe worth searching for an overboost switch as well to check that's all ok as it may well be going into limp mode because it sees an overboost fault.
