If you look at the pictures from the outside, there was hardly any snow on it really (relative to where it was and the sort of weather they need to expect)

It was a facility specifically designed to shelter jets when it snows, so its not like they werent expecting snow!

Someone fucked up their calculations somewhere I guess, or materials were substandard, as that little snow shouldnt be bringing it down surely?

Yes mate, of course.
We dont get snow here like they do in washington, the UK just experienced some of the most severe winter weather its had in living memory and we got less than half an inch on the roof of the barn, and my rough calcs point towards it being able to withstand a couple of feet quite comfortably, it just doesnt seem realistic it would ever see that, thats literally all of the snowfall we have had in the last 50 years there all needing to fall in the space of a couple of weeks, and if it did ever start to look likely, its easy enough to just chuck some extra supports in at the time.

reading the thread it seems that they were supposed to withstand 3.5 times the load of snow on top before it did that sort of collapse, the one to the left i can understand, but the middle one seems to have hardly any snow cover on it at all

kosman, look at the buildings, some of them have collapsed roofs on them where the snow has squished them
