Noisey Neighbours??
Recently I got my Esc Cos back on the road and since Ive had nothing but grief from the neighbours as it has a noisey exhaust...
When I start my Escort I usually let it run for a few minutes before driving off as the old let it warm up routine. I got moaned at by my neighbours, so I let it run as minimal as possible now just to keep them off my backs and to keep the peace.
My brother let my car run for 5 minutes tonight and a neighbour came out asking why he wasn't in the car or moving it instead of letting it just idle as its too loud. JB explained about letting it warm up and @ £6k for the engine its alot of money to just drive around without warming up and could possibly damage the engine.
The neighbour wasn't exactly happy and went back home. This was @ 6:30pm...
Ive had the same local copper round my house 3 times in 3 weeks complaining about the noise saying environmental health are now dealing with the problem. We've not heard anything, but I wanna know exactly what our neighbours can do about the noise from our cars?
I use my car on a Thursday and a Sunday. I let it warm up for 1 minute before driving and I turn it off just outside the garage, open the door and start it back up to put away when I get home to keep noise to a minimum. I go out around 9pm and return around 1am.
I don't bring anyone round my house now due to complaints of the noise and I don't work on any car in my garage except families due to complaints of the noise.
Our other problem is people over the road to us also have modified cars and have loud exhausts. His mates come past my house every few nights and Im pretty sure we get the blame for the noise. We got blamed for 2 cars street racing round the area, which were nothin to do with us.
Can anyone point me in direction for some advice? (Im going CAB next week) As Im starting to get to the point of inviting a load of mates round on a Sunday with loud cars to piss them all off, but obviously thats not the way for peace

I'm sure some would disagree, but letting it idle till it warms isn't the best thing to do for the engine - I've always been led to believe that it's best to start up and drive off straight away (but gently), to warm the oil more quickly than by leaving it to idle.

Mate i had the exact same problem with 1 neighbour who lived 4 house down, both my own neighbours did not moan once but this old git came out and said turn the engine off as it was too noisy, threatend me with the old bill, Noise Agency etc..
it really pisses me off as i dont consider it that noisey ans asked my own neighbours if they thought it was too loud too which both said NO! so what do you do to someone who moans for no reason?
and i agree with that a car should be driven not left idleing as you will cause borewash due to excessive fuel.

You lot crack me up
Ear plugs would be a good idea, think I may just do that :Cunning_Evil_Face:
Dan, what do you know you write for a Ford magazine Only joking mate. My old engine felt better warmed up left on idle before driving. My current engine makes no difference tbh hence I drive it slowly for a while after starting. JB is religious and will leave it running a full 30minutes to warm up (At 7am )
Milkman, do you get complaints or have they stopped knowing you dont care??
James, I have anti-lag Where can I get a meter to test and where can I find out the noise limits? An advisory on my MOT was excessively noisey exhaust
CSM, Wanna come round here made and tell them all to fook off Bring a few mates
D&S, please don't tempt him JB will leave it to warm up for an hour, then hang it round the block I bet your neighbours were well pissed We have a 4 car driveway and 4 spaces out on the road, so no problems with parking unless me mates come round I have to move 2 cars to put the Escort away

Bloody hell, what with all the little fuckers that go round nicking stuff, vandalising and generally terrorising places if all people have to moan about is a noisy exhaust then it's a pretty poor show! Admittidly i rarely use my rst but i always leave it idling for 5 minutes outside my garage before driving off to warm it up a little, ffs it's not like you're holding off the limiter every morning!!! Some proper busy bodies about with nothing better to do than moan.

IIRC the council will ask them to keep a diary at first then if it warrants it they can send out some recording equipment for them to record at the times you are doing it.
I'd doubt that it would register much behind double glazing inside someones house from a distance.
I know its arseache but it sounds like you've taken reasonable steps to consider your neighbours(you shouldn't have had too, but...), i'd lay it on thick and go the opposite way be overly nice to them. Drop them a tin of biscuits and a big christmas card, give them a really polite greeting whenever you see them "Good morning, lovely day?" It will get to them more than fighting against it.

Had this round my way,(as live in a village full of oldy's)And they don't like the S1 or cossie starting up as i let them warm up i don't give a shit,Double glazing fucker's GET IT
They cannot do anything at all,Yes they can moan blah blah but actually doing anything unless your sat revving the fooking engine up at 6k
Had the police out a few time's and exhaust noise (Unless no exhaust) Is a very hard thing for them to do anything about same as with council
Tell them do1

I had a similar thing outside my mates house a few months ago when I picked him up in my saph. I drove to bottom of his road to turn round, not quickly either I might add, but the car is noisy due to no centre box in the exhaust and the whine of the straight cut gearbox!
I was waiting outside for him, and this guy runs up the road screaming at me 'do you think it's funny to drive down my road like an arsehole?!!!' I was doing no more than 15 mph!! Lol!! After a good slanging match and with it getting VERY heated, I replied 'I tell you what, I'll show you how loud it really is shall I?', me and my mate both got in, I raised the revs to about 5k, sidestepped the clutch and fooked off up the road sideways banging off the limiter!!!
He weren't happy apparently but I enjoyed it!!

TBH as much as it grieves you ,you don't want this to escalate otherwise things get out of hand and it will always come back on top for you. The noise element in relation to diy is acceptable as lonh as its at reasonable times so the noise at 1am is potentially a concern BUT you are only returning home which is a resonable activity. I f your exhaust noise levels are within MOT acceptance then there is not alot that can be done.
My suggestion would be to have a resonable conversation with the people and suggest that maybe some compromise will be made when starting your car at 9pm but expain that there is little that can be done at 1am and ask them to suggest a resonable alternative (which I'm sure there isn't) So you are contious of the issue...prepared to eleviate the problem ..what more can you do????
In the end nothing changes but it appears that "well at least he tried to make it better"
Good luck

I agree.
I also would get pissed at unnecessary idling outside a house
Also when people come home and let the turbo cool down there instead of driving like a saint the last part of the journey so you can just switch off.

What exhasut is it out of interest? It cant be 'that' loud can it?
I certainly dont consider my magnex to be that loud, but i must admit im very conscious of it on the few occassions i have returned pretty late.
To be honest if its being started up at 7am and left to idle for half an hour, i think id get a bit annoyed with it. You can sort of see his point early in the mornings. Id probably mention it if its regular, but in a light hearted way.
It would depend on his attitude as to how id deal with it though. If their being an arse about it, then id probably be childish and be an arse back and do it more. If they have gone about it politely and properly, then id cut it down as much as i could.
When i had my WR that was REDICULOUSLY loud, i used to roll it down the road abotu 200 meters before i started it up. Now that used to wake half the estate up at 6am most weekends!

I've had problems with my neighbours
I've had
enviromental health - burning a tree,
building regs - got reported I was building on the house when I was building a garage
enviromental police - Security light on the side of the house
fire engines - from burning a tree the second time
and planning dept - building garage
When the you get a visit don't act like your doing something wrong be helpful and respectful and explain they are your own cars. Everytime the council have come around to me they have told me that I'm not doing anything wrong.
The last time I had a visit I had I told them that I'm feeling harassed and that it might be racially motivated haven't seen them since
About a month ago the neighbour shouted over the fence at me putting the car away and I lost my temper and told them that I had to listen to their piece of shit beetle start up every morning and night and I don't complain so why don't you shut up as no one is listening.
And not heard anything from them since
If your not doing anything wrong they can't tell you to stop it they will have to say try not to piss the complainers off.
Goodluck

Again, swings and roundabouts but id go with warming it up first everytime on idle as fuel consumption doesnt bother me. Id rather spend a few extra quid warming it up than spending a few grand on an engine rebuild.
Its all minimal in the grand scale of things though im sure. As long as you dont start it up, and thrash it to the redline.

i had the same problem with my next door neighbour when i had my cozzy. they tried to get a asbo on me for the noise and they had to keep a diary of what times i was coming and going. i worked shifts at the time so was leaving a 6am sometimes which no1 else in the street had a problem with except them. i got told off the council that there was certain noise limits between 7am and 11pm so i got my car tested for how noisey it was and i think it was something like 84dbs which was way under what it needed to be so they couldnt do fuck all.
beleive it or not the guy would get up early in the morning knowing what shift i was on just to give me some grief!
after telling him to fuck off a million times he eventually stopped.
it just seemed like because they have lived there for years that they think they own the street and can tell every1 what to do.
i still get evil looks now!
