You can use R134 in it but it won't be as cold.
Or retro fit it with some popular propane style alternatives such as dura-cool. Used that in my old Scorpio and it was ice cold in there. It's more efficient than R12 or R134a. Ice ice baby.
The Propane molecule is massive and if far less prone to leaking out as opposed to Freon etc.

Works fine. You just experience a %30 reduction in efficiency and have to fit new brass fittings.
Once the gullible had bought the pricey "conversion kits" the small time guys then focused on a brass bung and a can of coolant as sales wave #2.
Duracool replaces both and is cheap. I'm not sure if local laws or vendors supply a product like that for you in the UK.
