You need to plug it in to wind back the pistons.

If you force them in manually, you will mess the calipers up mate

Its possible to wind them back with a power probe, but this will not reset them and theres a chance you can end up with locked on rear brakes, diagnostic tool is best option

hi mate you have to plug in diagnostic tool vw5052 or 5051b it then releases the motors
you can then push the pistons back in the normal way change the pads then go back to diagnostic tool this then winds the motors back up to the newly fitted pads im sur you can get aftermarket diagnostic tools to do it also regards keith vw master tech

a mate of mine is now doing some.lol. He has got the diagnostic tool and heard the motors wind in but he cant push the piston back in? does the piston push straight back like a front caliper or do you have to wind it back like a normal rear one?

still wind the pistons back, all the diagnostic tool does is wind off the motors, he will also need to reset the motors after its all fitted back together

What a load of modern car SHITE. While he's under there tell him to rip the fucking motors out, stick a cable on and put a lever on the other end. Job jobbed.

little update.he had to open the bleed nipples to wind the pistons back. there was no way they would go back without doing that. now it is all back together he has a long brake pedal like there is air in the system. he is going to try bleeding them to see if it improves.
