My oh's kids have been given laptops thru some education scheme, and we're having trouble getting them to work wirelessly. When they were delivered, they came with an o2 dongle, but as we've just had Virgin installed we thought we'd have a go at hooking them up to the wireless router. The problem is, despite the laptop saying there is a signal from the router and that it is connected, we cant get anything to connect, just comes up with unable to connect. The oh deleted the o2 connection as we thought that might be the problem, but still nothing. Any one got any ideas as to what is going on?

I'm not very good with compies at all, but have you put in the key if it is protected wireless, as I know my lad and his mates need to do that to connect to mine, as I have mine protected.

pass key has been put in, it'll ask if we want to set up a new connection, but then if we say yes and click on wireless, it says connection already exists and is connected, but still wont display pages.

What router are you using and what wirless mode is it set to transmit on?

If its a new router and transmits on 802.11n the laptops may not be compatable with this and are only able to communicate on 802.11g or b

What version of windows is on the laptops? What does the error say when unable to conect?

laptop is 6months old and running vista. How do I find out what router is transmitting on? The router is a D-link, says Dir615 on front of it, as supplied by Virgin.
We had thought that as the laptops were supplied by Xma and have been loaded with Netintelligence that that may have had something to do with it, but maybe not. Cant turn it off anyway if it is, supposed to safeguard the kids on the net some how.

And how do I find out what wireless mode it set to transmit on?

It just comes up with message as if there's no connection, and then gives usual reasons as to why, such as address may be incorrect etc.

i had the same thing once with a sky router, turned out the key had been printed wrong, upper characters should have been lower and vice versa.

ring the virgin help line they will talk you through it and can check if they set up correct

Tried ringing Virgin, they're sending a new router, thats about as much help as they'll give.
But the laptop is getting the wireless signal, it's saying its connected via the signal, just wont go on the net, says page cannot be displayed etc

In internet explorer go to tools - internet options - connections - lan settings

if use a proxy server is ticked untick this click ok to go back out of menu

should work

they would have to reenable this to use at school again

Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar and press enter (this is the address of your router).

Do you now see the log in page to your router?

If nothing has been changed in the router settings the user name should be "admin" and the password feild should be left blank.

Once in click on "Advanced" then "Advanced Wireless"

Check what the wirless mode is set to (should be on 802.11 Mixed n/g/b)

If it is then it may be worth resetting the router (hold the reset button in on the back of the router for 20 seconds with the power still on).

Then search for the available wireless networks. You should see your router and it will be in an unsecure state!

Connect to the router then open a brouser window and log into the router using the details above (192.168.0.1).

Once in click on "Setup" then "Wireless Setup" and go through creating a network name and security key/password.

Once done save the settings and log out of the router.

You may loose connection once saved (as the wireless network is now password protected).

Search again for wireless networks and log in using the security key/password you created.

After trying everything else, I tried the above and it works, so gotta say big thanks to Moonie, kids are happy now, should keep them quiet.
