Default auto electrician help needed. Altenator?

I have bought a Vauxhall Frontera 2.0l *sport* LOL as a run around and it has a standard volt gauge on the dash no numbers just a needle and lines.
the other day I notised this started to wave up and down around the top (max) mark. now it gone straight over the max mark and the altenator is whining like mad all the lights are brighter than ever and the engine light has come on
Is this a regulator prob?? and does anyone know if its external to the alternator, or is it a new job?

Personally I wouldn't be driving it! If its only a short trip then I'd disconnect the alternator, don't want to risk frying everything!
