Mondeo emissions MOT fail....
Any help, the Missus car failed the MOT on emissions, CO2 was 4.783% when it should have been les than 0.3% and hydrocarbon? was 300ppm when it should have been 200ppm. The car runs like a dream, is good on Oil, Petrol and Water. Can anyone tell me what I need to check.

Im guessing its probably the Lambda sensor or the CAT, can anyone shed any light on other things it may be, also how can I test at home which one has failed if it was one of these two?

It doesnt have a port that I know of, its a 96 P reg 1.8 Lambda was low which points to the Lambda sensor, is there 2 sensors on a car that age?

Ahh right, ok is it much to get someone to read a fault? as its a runaround and I can physically change parts myself making it cheaper but I dont want to be spending ridiculous amounts of money if it cost more than the car is worth. But so far all points to a faulty Lambda

yea change the lambda run some red-ex or such like through it to give it a clean out, check the air filter and plugs also the MAF and what not are all it good condition, then take it for a blast down the motor-way you should hopefully blow the crap out of the engine, hopefully this will clean the emissions up without too much money involved.
my mondy was running quite rich when i first had it, i'v done most of this and now getting a good 40mpg at about 80-90mph so must be running ok now (admitted i haven't had it checked on emissions yet) but every car i'v owned has been real low down on emissions tests and this is the only practice i'v used.

Most likely to be the Lambda sensor, I've got a new sensor for sale in Paignton just down the road from you in Exeter if your interested ,can also plug it into a code reader for you aswell.

Just note very unlikely to be OBD2 compliant at this age, will no doubt still be on star system, if there are only 5 wires to the connector then it's star, located on the lower dash above drivers feet/leg area.
Even if the lambda were good reading, they do slow down switching speeds with age and this causes rich running, I got universal lambda's from ecolambda.co.uk and they are totally ok, about £30, just need to do a bit of soldering that's all, or crimping with supplied crimps.
I would clean the maf and reset the ecu after by pulling the kam fuse for a couple of minutes, a violet coloured one of 2 or 3 amps, in main fusebox by inner suspension turret.
