Mondeo TDCi Problems
My mondeo has broken down 3 times in the last 4 days.
Each time it's the same problem - the engine just dies accompanied by the glow plug light flashing.
Initially it won't start, the glowplug light clears with the ignition on but flashes when cranking.
After a few minutes, it will restart and drive normally with no plug light.
I've put my reader on it and it has logged code 1664. I gather this is a fuel pump fault code, but does anyone have any experience of this?

What's the best way to proceed then, are there any tests I can do to prove it or anything?
I heard the injectors are an arm and a leg!

very very common,
egr valve needs replacing
not injectors, the injectors usually make it rough on start up and then when they pack up the car wont run very well at all, tdci injectors are coded to the vehicle and cost about £1000 to supply fit and recode!
egr valve is usually on the shelf in ur local fraud dealer.

p1664 is normally a code set when pcm (ecu) needs updating or injectors need reprogramming
p0251 and or p1211 codes are set when injectors and or fuel pump are fucked.
one thing that does spring to mind is the camshaft sensor.if its black its prob fucked as they changed to grey and give symptoms you describe.
EGR valves normally go on the 2.2.

Trying to wind it over if it wont start will bring up a pump falt. EGR is possable. But if the injectors were out of calibration it would not run then start it would just run ruth. I have fitted a cam sensor many a time for this falt with modded wiring. I work for ford and no dis respect but after market scanners can lead you up the garden path with new ford diesels. I would pop it in to your locall ford dealer to have it pluged in to IDS then you will know for shore mate good luck.

is it a 2.0 or 2.2?yeah as said above.i too unfortunately also a techy at fords.see loads of probs on these and transits.cmp (camshaft postion)sensor is cheapest option to start with

It's a 53 plate 130 TDCi LX, totally cuts out without warning then won't run again for a few minutes.
It's not the smoothest diesel in the world but I've heard plenty of other mondys the same or rougher.

welcome dude.glad to be of some help.yeah check ya cam sensor fella.take engine cover off,almost central above inlet manifold is a grey plug.see what colour the sensor is?

mondeo fault
i had a 02 130 tdci with the same thing, garage said camshaft sens,had it replaced ,all ok for a while.sold the car to my sister a year later same problem,garage said it was the injectors then the pump,replaced both 3 days later same problem,i checked for leaks removed engine cover,split turbo pipe,replaced this,
ford reprogramed ,all well , sold car.

Mine did the same and broke down in fast lane of motorway.
Its the cam position sensor, which cost £16 from ford. As soon as you unclip the plasic engine cover you'll see it at the front of the engine, held with 1 bolt. Little fiddly but even a mechanical retard like me can fix it.

its nearly always the one from the egrto the intercooler at the front and 90% of the time splits on the upper bend lol

Mine too, did turn out to be the fuel pump, £480 to have it re-coned, so i would defiantly eliminate the cheaper possibilities first. I cant belive Ford released this engine has to be one of the most wanky diesel engines ever made.

its a good strong engine.never get base engine problems just the fuel pumps break up over time and contaminate the fuel injectors hence why they need doing at same time as pump.we have cars coming in on 200k+

I had this problem with mine last year.
Put it in to the dealer and they said injectors and fuel pump, also the ecu was playing up.
Wanted nearly £2k to fix it and I said no.
They then told me that they had to fit a crank sensor at £35 to get it into the workshop.
That is all that was wrong with it, and caused the other faults.

Well, I fitted a new one last night - so far so good
The one I removed was black, newie is grey.

my car is running has never not started or broken down it has black smoke coming out of it loss of power will still go 110 miles a hour but is a bit jerky at 50 2 people have said its the fuel pump any idears thanks will this pipe if split make a blowing noise or air noise i have changed the one on the right hand side which comes out of the intercooler this pipe was making a blowing noise ,
