Interesting discussion this is. I also need to get a a new daily drive. I do love the FRS but as it's pretty rare and not as practical as a 5door ST I think I'll pick the ST. I love the looks of the RS so as a weekend car it would be great. But then it has to replace my 3dr Cosworth and I don't really think I can compete with the status of that...any comments?

I've got an st3 and use it everyday

I thought so hard about getting a mk1 rs but decided not to...

The st as people have said is more an everyday car that you can drive hard and have a big laugh

The rs is more a car you drive hard to have a laught butw not so easy to drive as an everyday day.

My misses drives my st and it can be like a normal focus. As people said lots fell love the st, but the non careople say the rs is trying too hard (I don't agree it's just what people have said )

I totally disagree that it's difficult to drive at all..

I can do 5 miles a day of 110 miles a day depending on where I'm working and have no issues with either...

Can be motorway or rush hour into Birmingham city centre.. no drama...

Cos the markets flooded with them at the moment, going rates 6-8k but some still fetch over 10k if they are particularly good.

This is what i dont get lol !

like ive always said its fords poor attempt at bringing out a RS it was never a world leader in motorsport like the escorts mk1 and 2 then the rs cosworth , It was just a very bad attempt at a Homologation for the rally car which wasnt brilliant either . So in real terms its just a focus with horrid interior that doesnt handle well that looked okish but a focus ford should of never put the rs badge on it

the focus rs mk1 handles the road as good as any of the modern hatchbacks if not better,if youve drove one it was obviously a shitter in need of steering/suspension/bushes work as my focus handles fine. imo the frs is the best handling car ford have made.

the fact you can get decent focus rs's that were biult in 2003 for 2009/2010 ST money says it all,the ST is a good daily car but its no RS

1 minute in

i dont think there any review on the net that says the focus rs isnt a great handling car.

oh dear! You've been listening to clarkson too much. Lol

suspension setup isn't too different to a mk2 focus, so guessing your st doesn't handle that well either then. Lol

If they handle bad, I'd like to drive a good car! Must be phenomenal

so why are they so cheap?i mean I know cosies dropped in value when they were roughly the same age as the mark 1 rs focus but that was due to insurance costs,do you think the focus will follow in the same terms as value as the 3door cossie etc?

cheap compared to what?
every car is cheap the now,its a buyers market
youll pick up a 100k miler for around Ł6k mark

for an average miles car 40k miles your still looking around the Ł8k mark and low 10k miles there Ł12k mark, comparing that with other cars there age there not cheap.
as said you can pick up an average miles 2003 RS for 2009 ST money with same miles.

theres not much option with the mk1 as every cars the same so to sell yours you need to make it more desirable than the next. and that can only be lower the price. wheres as most other cars you have spec option, colour options etc

Well put

Though I would argue average miles is 120k for a ten year old car. Though it seems a lot of focus RS's are second cars so 40k miles cars are out there

Don't go just on mileage though I'd rather have my 117k 2 owner fully documented car than another with 50k miles but 7 or 8 owners...as it makes you wary about the history of the car

For the record yes I have an st3 and love it

And if my usage was different

Yes I would swap it for an rs

My issue is the st is just bit more comfortable and useable as it is a sporty normal focus. The RS is not one I would enjoy leaving in a multi story for example it is a special focus

Aha now I understand!

PMSL@FRS mk1 doesnt handle

I dont actually know what they are worth now? Say 6-10k?

Dont you remember when 3 doors were cheap too?

I first owned my 3 dr in 2001 and it was 14.5 years old. I paid Ł5500. 70k mile, stg1, ex concours car in VGC.

FRS is now 10 years old so comparable to the values of the 3 dr you mention.
Perhaps they will appreciate but less so because too many dick heads think they are wrong wheel drive

I got a st because its better suited to me and better engingeered over a mk1 focus with a badge on lets face it theres better s2 turbos with zetec s fitted ! You people dont seem to see what its all about lol ford put a halfords interior into a focus took the zetec that rst boys helped them tune then through it all together and called it a rs really really cheapened the name of the rs brand lol

and they sound like a flymo so deffo not a real mans rs

Lol at the above comment of a Focus handling bad!! Mine's standard and I raced a 320bhp Focus st and he had me on the straights but I battered him on the bends he couldn't keep understeering to fuck! Who ever told you a Focus rs is shit at handling probably had no legs! Awesome handling cars!

Reason I chose my ST is that I wanted 5 door, I've done the mk1 Focus thing and wanted something a bit newer, there are plenty of overall better cars out there for the money so I really don't think any argument about 'I chose an ST over an RS because it is better' etc is really relevant. Parts for the mk1 RS are getting hard to come by too, so if you smack it then you could be in a bit of bother. I chose an ST because I wanted one, and that's it

Jay -
You are literally the only person I've ever heard saying they don't handle well
So I doubt you've ever driven one.

Road manners in 1st gear when booting it are sometimes eye opening. But that is separate to 'handling' I'd say.

i had the use of one with 16k on it with front mount ect for about 3 weeks and driven loads for like a hour ect the most stricking thing are the seats not only are they horrid to look at but you feel like your sat on them rather than in them 1 i know im a fat cunt but they aint nice !I think the moral to this thread is we are all different and like different things in a car but i can openly say i cant see the function this car has as a rs apart from they rust well

I spose the focus mk1 is my pet hate im sure you have one !

Ahh so it's just a pet hate! Yes mine is vauxhall insignias, now They ARE a poor handling car. Lol.

Very strange that you hate what auto car, top gear etc regard as a special car
(Referring to its Sachs racing dampers, quaiffe gearbox parts, brembo brakes, oz wheels etc, which is the argument FOR the rs tag/badge
That and the whole reason that car magazines/testers ever liked even 'normal' focus in the first place... The way they drove and handle!! Lol

MMMMmmm you could bolt all that to any car and it will look good on paper but in reality bad i just think the car wasnt ground breaking like the rs brand was known, ford had so much to pull on and released a car which could of been built in the early 90's rather than the 2000's and trying to make it exclusive by the one colour idea ! So yeh i think the focus is weak in my eyes .

Maybe im just to old and fucked for the car i just dont get the hype

I do love my ST i love the noise and the looks and yes it is a modern xr in many ways but its a very good car over the spectrum and quite refined for a focus and although ive done alot with the handling because it is heavy and rolled about abit ive tried very hard to keep to keep it a nice ride quality so it gives a good feel from a driving escperience but not harsh so imo it does everything well not just in a performance view

I will own another RS but i think itll be a MK2 focus no matter how much the voices keep saying cosworth

Put it this way i paid 5500 for mr frs with no history and im the 9th owner with 760000 miles on.
if that was the equivalent st then ud be looking at less money and i know the car id rather have
weather these have 40k low owners or 125k they will always be desirable and i love the RS brand and this frs without its history and high owners is one of my favoutite daily drives ive ever had use it all weathers and love putting
mileage on her
i nearly bought an electric st but there just that little bit too common but not to say i wont have an st as my next car but whatever car i buy to replace the focus rs i will never part with my series 1

Focus RS owners think its the best car in the world and have frs blinkers on.

I prefer the look of the ST and from what people say about the, they're great cars.

Quick Reply: Focus RS mk1 or Focus St-3 ?
