Quite fancy one of these however i'm on Vodafone currently. Is the 3Gs still an O2 exclusive handset?
Had a quick look online but never found much other than tech spec.

Yes mate it is.
You can buy on PAYG for 440 for 16gb or 540 for the 32gb.
You can get it on contract and unlock it, but you still have the 18m/24m contract....

O2 are losing the exclusivity soon..... If you but on PAYG now it's locked to O2, but you can jailbreak them by all accounts.
You could buy the older version sim free from Play so you might be able to get the new one now too....

I was looking at getting the HTC Touch HD, till I used one, nad even my 2G was far nicer to use .. Contract was up so straight from 2G > 3GS and WOW!

You can unlock it, but its unstable .. ultrsn0w works on purplera1n, but there have been issues.... But unlock is possible, but better to wait as purplera1n doesnt patch the kernel properly ......
Even the guy that made purplera1n is waiting for the devteam jailbreak/unlock, what does that tell you?
