std they are nice, excellent mechanicals real good solid cars, but very dull to drive, and weigh as much as a super tanker, so performance is going to be very lame if used to cossie esp 2wd, nice relaxing car to drive though.
Expensive to tune compared with cossie.

Actually im on my 5th T5 now and there bullet proof, ask the cops, there fast as fook really and NOT expensive to tune - remaps are approx Ł300 to 300bhp, air filter Ł40, same as any car you can fiddle about with turbos etc but a simple remap will suffice.

Take a look on www.t5d5.org for further info & buying guides.

Depends what you call fast, may be similar up to 300bhp cost wise but after that don't think so at all.
Also depends which model as a 1487KG T5 with 211bhp is going to get embarrassed by a 20 year old std 2wd cossie at 1230KG, and 201bhp, but even volvo figures quote for the 225bhp 0-62 in 7.5 secs(est), compared with 0-60mph 5.8 2wd cossie(ford figures).
Not a hope to be as tuneable as cheaply as a cos imo, or as fun.

Answers to the same question some time ago https://passionford.com/forum/genera...o-850-t5r.html

I had one for eight months. I bought as I was commuting from home to Edinburgh regularly and I wanted something different. I liked it but I'm done with older cars now. It has all the toys and is comfortable. Mine had a Rica chip, exhaust and was lowered so it was okay but they are big and heavy BUT very reliable if you have one that was maintained.

Expect to pay around Ł1500 to Ł2000 for one that has been looked after but with miles around 150K +

I have seen a couple for Ł3.5- Ł4K with low miles and lots of history.

The other bonus is that they are very cheap to insure. At the time,it was one of three cars I owned and I was paying Ł120 fully comp per year. Granted, I'm 43 with no claims but they are not considered a high risk by insurance companies.

i have been considering these also. not in place of the cossie but as our every day car.not fussed by tuning them or how fast they are as long as they are pokey i dont mind.plus the estate is what i'd be looking at for the dogs. what are people getting mpg wise and what are the "normal" problems ?

are they easy to get parts for ie,gaskets, turbos, etc etc .?

We use a 1996 850R estate to tow the Escort. It takes me,my mate and my da,plus our personal bags, plus spares for the Escort, plus toolbox,jack,2 gerry cans and 4 spare wheels etc etc and the trailer towed no bother at all.Have had it a year with no real problems.Got us from Wexford in Ireland to Croft and back last month easy!!And it has every extra you could want, including air con and electric seats with 3 memories!Regards,Micky
