Going to look at a GT Tdi tomorrow - Things to check? [BOUGHT IT!]
The guy at the garage seems quite genuine, he said all the bodywork is "mint", there is a problem with air flow meter or something and he said it could be the turbo, but getting it fixed before sale.
The car is a 1998 S Reg 110bhp model.
So, any specific things that I can check, apart from the usual panel gaps etc.
Its a cheap car so wont be digging too deep, but any help appreciated!

Arch edges for rust, rear lights letting water in to actual lense, some have electrical issues with windows and locking
headgaskets
In all honesty if you can stretch your budget.....get a 130 as they all seem flat compared to a 130............. i miss my bora 130 badly
Shorty will confirm LOL

If you go for a remap you will probs have to fit a new clutch as most seem to state that once remappped the clutch starts slipping very quickly lol
will be good for 140-150bhp and awesome tqe aswell
Ohh the arbs are very common failure but its poly bush them for fit and forget
Rear bush's can be buggered aswell, all niggly things really but the engine will last forever if its looked after with the correct oil

I had a 110.... before I got the 150.... the 110 still motors, in fact our Bora was a 90 and it still moved like shit off a stick.
Just make sure the turbo's good.... make sure its kicking in when it should.... bout 2,500 revs...

If its the PD engine which i think it is you require 5/40 fully synthetic oil that matches vw specification.........some swear by genuine vw oil and some say other brands are fine
I personally bought the halfords brand oil as it matches the spec and never had an issue or used a single drop of oil in my bora.
i went to my nearest vw dealer for a price for 5 ltrs of pd oil and it was over Ł50 ........aye right the full genuine vag filter kit only cost that posted to me from newcastle dealership
popped to halfords and bought there brand for Ł35 but one brand ive always used for previous cars is comma and they do a specific PD oil for about Ł35 delivered via ebay or try your local motor factor
Some PD engines are on longife service plan which is every 20k for a service which i think is just wrong lol.... will tell you in the service history
Cambelt + waterpump should be changed around 60k

I found myself clicking on saff cossies and escos's but really they are not economical ..
These diesels pack a good punch when u want em to, and are awesome on fuel economy ..
Its only a stop gap anyways

Good cars - even the 110bhp versions. Look out for any leaks in the boot, which may be a sign of the rear washer pipe having come loose in the car. This isn't a major problem but could be a god haggling point.
Also as far as I know you can't get a 110Bhp "GT" version - perhaps im wrong though.

I have one of the 110 gt tdi and the most important thing to check which is VERY common is to check its not pressurising and chucking coolant out the expansion bottle when giving it the beans...me and a friend have both have the exact problem i mentioned and has been a real pain for both of us. You can drive slowly all day without a prob but when you boot it the low coolant level warning beeper starts to beep in a few miles so beware. Also check the turbo is working fine and again when giving it beans make sure it doesnt go into limp mode and limit the power severly...trust me if it happens you will know.
Both of these probs can cost bucks as ive found out so be sure to check!

its all about the 5 pot
I had a gti turbo anniversary and i wished id got the tdi !!
They do suffer with turbos and AFM's as you say, so make sure its 100% when you drive it, as both are around Ł150 and Ł500 to fix.

I bought it!
It has a problem making a LOUD induction noise and no power, but all will be sorted when I pick it up.
Its gonna have 12 months mot, 1 month warranty, and all the niggly bits I mentioned for when I pick it up.
Could be a 130 he said, but I'm not bothered either way.
Cant wait to get rid of this 406 filth!

Bet that loud induction noise is something to do with a breather pipe..... it happened to my 150 once... think its a common problem but not expensive to fix..

Excellent car it is, nice choice! Engine code will be on the cambelt cover, that will tell you all you need to know.

Get the engine code and we will be able to tell you Stu.
It will be in all of the history somewhere, or, there is a sticker in the boot underneath the boot carpet with it on. It is 3 letters.
Looks nice though, proper nice, i like it.

Havent got the car yet, wanted to get a few bits for it before I get it prolly Friday.
Cant even find a Haynes manual for it, as it says it doesnt support the PD engine, yet I dont know if mine is a PD or not.
Dont wanna waste Ł20 for the sake of it..
Thanks for the comments

Thanks Shortie, I took the risk and went and got the haynes manual anyway, looks like they dont do one for the PD engines.
Thanks for letting me know the colour as well!

PD Oil is no longer expensive! Its about 17 + vat quid for 5 litres. Thats the proper Quantum stuff. You WILL need the engine code to tell if it has the PD engine fitted.
