i love my 3-door but i cant get saphs out my head as i love the shape ,lines,interior etc etc

but fukn love saphs
was in mymates today 4x4 ebony black stage 3,slammed.black rims etc,smooth as,and went very well
there is defo something about them,not just the price
id rather a saph over an escort cossie all day

What was appealing about the 4-door, it was much the same mechanically? Let's face it, apart from leather trim it didn't really offer anything else on the gadget front. Fact is, some people preferred the less showy looks of the Sapphire shape, the practicality of 4-doors. People who might not bought a Cosworth because of the extrovert looks of the 3-door found there was a car for them in the Sapphire shape
If the 4-doors weren't popular, they wouldn't have sold 3 times as many.
I could have bought either shape when I got mine - the price difference was only about 1k more for an older 3-door at the time.
I appreciate they were the original incarnation of the car and what people associate with the name 'Sierra Cosworth'. First Cosworth I went in back in 87 as well; however I, like many others, prefer the 3 box look of the 4-door saloon and the fact it doesn't draw stares to the same extent

For some people the 3-door looks will be a pro........for others the 4-door looks will be a pro, the fact you can park it somewhere and most people won't even notice it.
I could afford a 3-door or RS500 if I really wanted one ...but I wont buy one as the Sapphire is available....simple as that.
I prefer the Escort Cosworth without the big rear wing on.
The OP was asking for PROS and CONS. The 3 door looks can be both ( to different people ) in just the same way as the 4-door looks can be a PRO to me and and a CON to Craig.

Bigger rear ARB
Stiffer shell
Heated front screen
The Looks
Can come with leather as standard
Can come with air-con as standard
Sierra 4-door CONS
Less exclusive ( if that bothers you )
These are some of the changes from 3-door to Sapphire 2wd made by Ford. ( don't blame me if you don't agree with what is written - these were what Ford said they did! )
Obviously the 4-dr shell was stiffer which has to be taken into account.
Spring rates went up from 106 to 118lb/in at the front and 263 to 286 lb/in at the back.
Damper rates were made softer in bump and stiffer in rebound.
ARB was increased to 16mm on back
Castor increased by over one degree
Camber made fractionally more negative
Kingpin inclination made slightly greater.
Front knuckles re-designed to lower the front roll centre from 144mm to 70mm

They had a contractual commitment to take more a lot more than 5500 engines from Cosworth - they only had to build about 5500 for homologation purposes. They changed to the 4-door shape to house the remaining engines for a few reasons, one of which was to do with production line constraints.
One of the other reasons was they were trying to move the image of the car upmarket into the junior BMW/Mercedes sector with the 4-door. People interested in that sort of car didn't necessarily want the 3-door looks/wing etc.
Have a read of the history of the Sierra and you will will see that those are the reasons they stated they did the change in body shape

well Mike i say 3 door you say sapphire but your still wrongthe 3 door is stunning but i was out last night in the 2wd sapphire cossie iam using till my escos is getting work done on it and got to admit yeah i still love them but i for me it just doesnt have the WOW factor like a 3 door or driving a 3 door but it does still have the wow factor its a cossie at the end of the dayi feel that my 3 door handles great the sapphire is good but not as the way i would say the 3 door does it but thats moa it maybe some mods thats done to the 3 door iam not sure

Havnt read the complete post,but agree with col,would have a saff over an escos,or a 3dr,maybe im getting old,but they both seem to chav like to me,ppl asking why did you put a nice big spoiler on the back,plus i cant be doing with this 4wd,and 2wd saff's drive so nice,and whom in there right mind pays Ł10 + for a mk5 escort !!!!!!!!!!!

i bought and sold my 3 door for 10k. al rallysport built car that was runner up concours at ford fair 2002 or 2003 cant remember. there so dated interior aswell. late spec saph dash with leather and elecy sunroof is another thing i prefer bout my saph.

No matter which one you buy,you get the same enjoyment,i drive a cossie as im a boost junky,if i wanted a car for possing it wouldnt be an old ford of any kind,doesnt matter if it,s an old dog of a saff or a mint escos they all give the same buzz,as scooby slayer points out,alot of ppl think you drive a saff because thats all you can afford,i own a saff as it was the best shell i could find at the time,and i only had my 3dr craig,as i could get it on classic insurance at the time,,as i couldnt get a decent quote on any thing else with my driving record,and have always liked saff,s that why i had them when they were 3yrs old

3 door was their first attempt it looked good but was a god damm awfull car to drive, vastly improved with the Sapphire then they went gay with the 4x4 & then totally bent with the Escort .
If your a pansy the 4x4 or Escort is your choice.
If you like Bling that handles like a sack of shite then a 3 door will be ideal.
If you love driving & want to go fast then a rwd Saff is the weapon of choice,
SIMPLE !! .
