saffy or 3dr

PassionFord Post Whore!!
I almost sold my Sapph for a 3dr but decided against it. Ive never drove a 3dr but heard lots of people saying they dont handle so well and are nervous in comparison etc etc. That is what put me off to be honest as I love the way the sapph drives and the handling will be nicer once I sort out suspension and rear beam I hope. Until Ive had a proper go of a 3dr Ill always say Sapph. Depends on your driving style and if you want the "look" of a 3dr. I drive like a hooligan in mine so couldnt justify doing it to a 3dr cos they too pretty

I'm Finding My Feet Here Now
A good 3 door is twice the price of a good Saff, and a lot rarer. Much depends on budget and what you want to use it for. If someone had say £10000 to spend, a good 3 door would cost around that figure. If the engine was to go pop, would more cash be available to sort it?. If a £5000 Saff was to suffer an engine failure, there would theoretically still be £5000 in the pot to mend it. I went the 3 door route and had an engine failure. It cost me £5730 to get it put right properly. Luckily I had the means to be able to have the work carried out. It would seem to me that the reason that so many Cossies are getting broken is that people are buying cars that are not what they seem. When the worst happens as it often does, it would be hard to justify spending say £5000 on a car that cost £3-4000. Am I right or am I right?.

Very true Nash.
Quite a few differences between a 3-door and a 2wd Sapphire in terms of suspension on standard cars.
There was a good interview with Rod Mansfield from SVE at the time of the launch about why they had made the various changes.
They could have kept the original 144mm rollcentre requested by Ford Motorsport for the 3-door but they also wanted to iron out some of the criticisms and flaws of the 3-door set up for road use ( although those flaws/criticisms were not valid to the same degree for track/motorsport use - and in some ways were an advantage over the Sapphire set-up )

After almost 15 years with my Saph. it's still here... I have had plenty opotunities of getting either a 3door or a Escort and have tried them all...but no thanks...they dont come close to a Saph....maybe the Escort is a better handling car but thats all it has in my opinion..
So..put in Short... get a SAPH.

Hmmm...back in the days I would have been on your side and said..3door all the way...but then in 88' I saw the Saph. for the first time, and after that there was only one Cossie for me !!!!! So there it is ... THE BEST LOOKING COSSIE IS DEFFO. THE SAPH. COSWORTH .. without a question !

a sapphire isnt as rare as a 3 door or escosso it will hold better value plus look nicer hands down if you ask any proper gen person that doesnt or hasnt own one of these i bet they would say the 3 doorFACT!!!
iam not saying sapphires are not nice because they are really nice i am currently driving a my mates 4x4 sapphire cosworth and a 2wd till i finish my escos so i know what i talking about bud i have had sapphires and a 3 door and now an escos and also drive my mates bt escos aswellyou cant turn around and say a sapphire because the way it sounds to me you have only had a sapphire and havent owned a 3 door or escosask anyone thats had the lot pal and the 3 door and escos win all the time as i have said above i still love sapphires because its a cosworth at the end of the day going ask this q on the RS owners clubthey will tell you a 3 door but its all about how much you have to spend?
answer these qeustions
1.what will be worth more a sapphire or a 3 door hatch back cossie?
2.what has more carisma?
3.look at the sapphire owners most them have said sapphires?
4.whats the orignal cosworth?

Had both, and kept the 3 door ! even though the saf is/was a very nice car to drive ,felt saff and handled excellent. the 3 door is a little twitchie but only when your pushing it hard, learn and get to know the car and the 3 door is the best all round machine

exactly right - 3dr looks better - saph drives better
I would buy a 3dr for best tomorrow if I found the right one at a decent price on my doorstep - but cant be arsed looking around again - spending every weekend up and down the country.
I went 4x4 3dr 4x4 4x4 but always regret selling the 3dr not the safs - but needed the cash.

1. what has that to do with a good Cossie..I have mine because it makes me feel good when driving, like the looks of it when it's just standing in my drive and so on...I'm not having mine for the money it MAY be worth...and here in DK there is not much difference in price anyway...but I know that they are worth more in GB, but I have explained my stands above
2. depence who you ask..and yes it looks radical, but to me also a bit old so you ask me and I really like the look of the saloon, but that me..
3. Here in DK they all are Sierra's, they are not Sapphires by name...I think that it's only in GB they are called like this....so mine is a Sierra Cosworth .. I only put in the Saph thing in my tag to be a smartass here in dk ... and all the 3door owners call their cars for...3doors..sooo cant see the difference ??
4. Well that is a good question ..if you read the book "Cosworth, the search for power" ... but as I said earlier...not important for me
Yes it is probertly more rare but that does not concern me as I have mine for what it is,... a F...... nice car And yes I have not owned a 3door...as I could not afford one back in 86-87...around £60-65000 here in DK oops...so you could say it's all about how much you want to spend ...but I have tried 3doors both modded and std...fine cars !!! BUT they got "old" ...for me.. in 88' ... I like the "timeless" look of the saloon so much more, they drive (in my opinion) better than the 3door, more practical ... so even if I had the money at that time, I would have sold it and got a "saloon" ...... so put in short again, in my world there is no doubt that this is the best allround Cossie ... (remember my opinion)
Also the escort is a great car, drives absolutly super (yes I have only tried them..but several times and cars), looks the nut's from the outside,...but there is just something inside that turns me off...and like the 3door...it lacks doors ......it's all about taste...so simple
You can ask all the people that you want...all they can do is give you their opinion and what they feel and respect for that....but MY opinion is as above
Bottomline is ..I would like one of each type, no doubt...but I'll bet that the "Saph" would clock up much more miles than the 2 others togeather ... by the way..the old white one has passed 330 K km this year ...

Its all down to personal Taste i've driven them all and like the 2wd saff best
At the end of the day RUST is the big problem with any of them
Imo the only reason the 3dr and the escort are more expensive its cos theres less of them BUT that will change how many saffs get broken daily?
Paul
