on a probe 2 litre 16 valve engine runs fine and if you rev it smoothly it is fine but if you accelerate hard or push throttle down it does not rev just miss fires and makes a big bang any ides it my cousins car and he stuck for ideas
my first thoughts were maf sensor would just unplugging it make a improvement or can they be tested?
If it drives ok (just a bit rough) with it unplugged then it's your culprit. It's ok to drive it to test with the MAF disconnected, but don't drive for miles and miles like it.

My old Celica did that, seem to remember it was the leads breaking down under load or dodgy plugs... anyway, serviced it and it went fine after that.
Cheers,
