Don't need anything super amazing, would be nice to be able to spec a 9 pin serial port on it (a rare feature i know)...

There's some great deals on refurbed laptops out there. I got mine from PC world and can't complain.

Will - have a look at MOXA for usb - rs232 converters. Their stuff works really well and in many cases is better than a native serial port due to e.g. better hardware buffers, proper hardware handshaking and flow control etc. Less convenient though....
