Wait until it is 100% confirmed before resigning, you would hate for things to go tits up and you lose both,

first of all, find out how much notice you need to serve before you can go
tell your new/future employer these details
then they will give you a contract saying that you will start work on whatever date
when you have signed that and it's all confirmed, hand in your notice to your current employer

I did this at the tail end of last year.
I made sure the offer was with me & I had confirm approval in writing, before saying 'ta-ta'.

As above, to simplify, just state to your new employer that your notice period will be taken from the date you sign your new contract, NOT the date you verbally accepted the position, this should be clear to them already though as it's pretty standard stuff, so they won't hang around to get the paperwork in order.
p.s Good luck with the new job.

It's a great feeling handing your notice in, especially if you hated your job. I have only ever handed my notice in twice, and they said I didn't even have to work it for one of those. Although to date I've also been made redundant, been sacked and walked out. Happy days.

Employers are NOT required to give out a contract untill the probation period has been met.
Dont shoot yourself in the foot by demanding a contract if they dont work that way. Aslong as you've got written job offer and you've accepted your ok.

Very true!! Think the main thing is to get confirmation that they will definately employ u as said most your on a probationary period which means u can be given just 1 weeks notice and no reason to let u go if they wanted to!

Main things are to find out as said how much notice ur current employer would want as notice and make sure ur hopefully new employer is happy waiting, eg they may want u to start in 2 weeks whereas ur current place might want 4 weeks notice so you would have to ask ur boss nicely if they can make it shorter etc!

Providing you have conformation of a new job offer theres no reason why you shouldn't give your existing employer your relavant notice. And remember not to burn your bridges incase the new job don't go as planned.

We just had a guy in my office hand in his notice on a "verbal job offer".

He didnt get his new job and the company wouldnt let him retract his notice, basically he is fucked now with no job!

When the offer comes in writing.

I got a verbal offer 3 weeks ago, it took another 5 days for the paperwork to arrive with my start date on (I told them I would have to give 2 weeks notice),
I signed and sent back and gave in my 2 weeks notice,
I have had no love for the company for over 6 months, they laid me off (how i heard about the job I am going too) then took me back on, then dropped 10% off our wage and upped the workload,
So this past 2 weeks have been hell, add to the lack of enthusiasm as I am leaving I have been getting snide comments form my gaffer, silent treatment etc, then this week he has given me the shittest shifts, I was supposed to do my last day tomorrow and finish at midnite, I told them I couldnt to the response of 'Obviously you dont want to take a good refrence with you', fuck blackmail I finished today instead, Cunts.
Luckily my other 2 referee's are the manager of the fleet hire company my new place use, and the MD of the refridgeration company my new place use

Until today I have done my job to their level of expectation, I couldnt be arsed being a cunt as I just wanted to do my time and leave, but fuck being blackmailed, that really annoyed me.

The letter of offer forms the basis of any contract because it should outline job title, start date, hours, salary and holiday entitlement.

As everyone has said make sure you have a written offer before doing the offski

Regards notice, just remember if they wanted rid of you you'd be gone tomorrow, there is nothing to make you work your notice period and the only thing that the company you are leaving can do is with hold money from your notice period, it would be illegal for them to with hold wages and holiday entitlement earned.
