Default Blacktop/Silvertop 2.0 Zetec differences

What are the differences between a Blacktop/Silvertop 2.0 Zetec engines.
Just the important bits really, not worried about ancilleries and looms etc as I've already got a Weber Alpha TB setup.

Wondering if its worth going to a blacktop instead?

Engine mount is a bit diff bolt holes are in diff place than a silvertop

If it going in a mk4 you will have small issues with the innerwing mount platform fouling on the idler pully but im sure someone makes a mount for it.

Waterpump is diff not so easy to get one that spins clockwise but you can make up a system to spin it anti clock or source the clock wise pump from the usa.

Sump can be an issue as you cant use the silvertop sump on the blacktop unless you mod 2 sets of mains caps to be able to install the windage plate as the silvertop sump has a separate plate blacktop one is incorperated into the sump.
You can either fit spacers and longer bolts so you can fit the tray and use the silvertop sump or have the 2 mains caps machined to be used in the blacktop so you dont need the spacers (done this one on my dry build engine to accept a silvertop sump) or you will need a diff exhaust manifold its not out by much but a silvertop one i dont think goes where you need it to on a blacktop sump.
Not 100% on that one so someone can confirm or correct me

Fiting wise apart from that its about the same although you should be able to get a bit more power from a std blacktop than a silvertop but not much more i think webber say its about 5/10bhp

Didn't know that there were issues about locating the right water pumps.... or the sump, or the manifold! Hmm, sounds like hassle....

Mine is an St170 engine, just finished puting it in. Custom engine mount which moves the engine 20mm further forward, custom manifold and uses the black top sump which has been modded to clear the driveshafts and front mounted starter.

Rick.

Silvertop sump can be fitted but as said you need to spacer the main bearing cap bolts to fit then windage tray. I got some spacers machined up to do it and it works fine. Tbh you might fine the downpipe will fit round the sump, mine didn't on a mk6 so i went for the silvertop sump.

Engine mount has one hole slightly different, the left one of the three, and the water pump, just route your drivebelt via an idler pulley to spin it the other way.

I know this is a very old thread but does a black top sump and oil pick up fit straight to a silvertop engine? Thanks for any help.

Shape and bolt hole wise yeh it should do but as for if it actually works out i think the silvertop main caps are going to be too tall to allow the blacktop windage tray (which is built in to the first stage of the sump) without fowling on them.

It will be the same for the pick up pipe its not going to bolt up where it should as again the caps on the silvertop are twice the height of the blacktop ones.

Is there any reason you really need to change the sumps over?

Thanks for that Mark. I'm just selling a silvertop as fitting black but using the aftermarket sump from my silvertop. Just wanted to know if I could sell the engine with black top sump fitted but obviously it's going to involve cutting holes in tray etc for caps by the sound of it.

Not really an option for me. The black top sump has had casting cut away to take starter but my issue is ground clearance. I only have about 5" with my ERA flat bottom sump that would be down to 3" with the standard black top one. It's in a 7 type kit car.
