Default cosworth engine rebuild manual 'for dummies!'

Someone should make one for people like me...I am quite handy with a set of spanners, know how most things work but have no mechanical training as such (i'm a sprayer). Is there a manual with step by step guide on how to rebuild a cossie engine. I was thinking of buying a fucked one on ebay and just teaching myself...what manuals are available? I have gpt tons of drive and enthusiasm and just want to lear to do it myself rather than keep sending it away...any advice? cheers guys

i would have no enthusiam if it wasnt an engine i loved and owned...the idea would be to buy one fucked and rebuild it to work again...not just to strip and have a look lol

The problem with buying one "fucked" is fucked in what way?

Typical condition of a "fucked" YB is going to be:

Head is beyond its last skim and not useable
Crank is scored and not useable
Block servicable
Pistons worn out
conrods useable

So first thing you'll need to do is source a decent head and crank

Far cheaper to buy a decent one, and rebuild that IMHO

I know there are plently of good honest engines about for a good price, but i really want to do it all myself, even if it does go wrong...i get a lot of satisfaction by knowing everything inside out and knowing what to do..

Its a pretty basic engine, so not a bad place to start from any point of view other than the expense of decent quality secondhand bits surely?

Yes but it then works, if you make a mistake and it throws a rod, you will have nothing at all to show for what you have spent.

Dont misunderstand me, Im not trying to put you off doing it, just trying to make you aware of the issues if you get something wrong.

I do all my own engine work, and the engine in my nova cost me about 12K in total, if it spat a rod bolt out the first time it turned over, it wouldnt have left me with much to show for my money, but thats a risk im happy to take (and luckily have never had a problem so far in 15 years of building engines) personally, but just making sure you are aware of the issues too.

Personally I started on cheap engines, and I would recomend that route to anyone asking generally, but your choiec if you want to jump in at the deep end financially or not at the end of the day.

thats the problem i have, ive built numerous CVH/ZVH engines all have been good and never gone wrong, i also built my engine in my saff circa 500bhp its got all the right components i built myself, but im really nervous about putting it in and running just in case it like you said "throws a rod" ive wasted lot of Ł0000s on it.
ive been toying with the idea of giving it to harvey to take it apart and double check everything and change it if need be.

I think the biggest problem is we can all be handy with a set of spanners (normally throwing them at the mrs but still ) But its checking tolerances, being able/having the knowledge to measure bearing clearances etc etc. Like chip said if u have at least 1k spare ur not fussed about go for it!!! Its deff something that if u did and it worked ok would give u a big sense of acheivement!!

If its just a pretty standard spec then its not as hard as said, but when u want to run bigger cams more power etc and stressing engines etc thats when u can come unstuck if its not 100%!!

My current YB I built from the bits of two dead ones, plus about 400 quid for a crank grind, set of bearings, and new oil pump and gaskets.

Took me about 2 hours in total, secondhand rings the lot, as a temporary measure as I wanted to use the car the next weekend, stupid thing is though, 3 years later its still fine, it smokes a touch on idle from the fact I didnt bother to swap the stem seals, and it uses a little bit of oil past the secndhand piston rings, but it still goes pretty well, and even with 34 pounds of boost and 125bhp of nitrous, it still works fine.

But that was only so cheap cause I had a couple of dead YB's to hand in the first place.

I'd still like to build a decent motor for it, but struggle to justify doing so to myself when it still goes well on the old crap that is in it now!

Thing is though, I knew what to look for when choosing which secondhand parts to chuck in, and which tolerances were more important than others etc, you'll struggle to find a manual that teaches you that, as any manual will be about getting everything just right, not what is actually "good enough" or not, if that makes sense?

So thats when you end up spending proper money!
