Mk3 Golf VR6's
What are peoples views on these please?
The cossie is as good as up for sale and i need someting reasonably quick but reliable to last me a couple years untill i can afford an escort cossie.
I dont really want to go away from ford but there doesnt seem to be anything decent ford have done that ticks the box's i need.
Are the VR's pretty difficult and expensive to get extra power out of? What do they handle like etc?
any input will be appreciated
thanks

people have good gains from the exhaust etc, and a good air filter.
For real gains your looking at superchargers for ŁŁŁŁ's i think.
Great cars though and sound awesome

i had this one
great car, sounded the nuts pushed about 200hp reliable. then theres the BUT
average was 22-27mpg it handled awful even when i bought coilovers and eibach roll bars too frnt heavy, then you really have to drive them hard for the power...
however it was a very comfortable, reliable, lovely to drive car... i sold mine just to buy my cossie also because it just didnt handle. depends wat you want really...

Both my RST's were run as daily runners and neither gave me cause for concern. They always got me to work and always got me home. Only reason I stopped using them as daily runners was I didn't want to spoil them and I needed something a bit more suitable for work. As much as I love my S2 I felt a proper prick climbing out of the roll cage wearing a suit

106 GTi is a 1.6 isn't it? Will feel shit slow compared to a cossie and probably a VR6 as well. I'd get a VR6 to be honest for that money or look at something like BMW E36 323/325/328 or possibly something like a Civic VTi.

your be very suprised to a 106 GTI believe me, they can leave alot of the bigger performance cars standing!
Handle on rails, cheap to run, reabile, fairly cheap now, overal a very nice little car that you could drive everyday & track it on the weekend

i know what you saying mate but i wouldnt want to ruin an rst either, its pretty much my favourite car id rather have one than the cossie tbh but i think the golf will take alot less to keep it on the road.
the cossie aint been to bad but i have had to spend alot on it to keep it going and it is starting to rot, i cant afford to deal with that sort of thing atm

yes azev A's wen i sold it i got Ł4500 for it about 4 yrs ago did a search for it few months ago just for a laugh but couldn't find it think the lad who bought it ruined it!?
i was gonna smooth the bumpers few more small bits and it was gonna be perfect then.
few more pics shame i sold it too i had a BB TB to go on and a ported inlet to free up about 20hp more

I like them, purely because the noise the engine makes is PORN!
Need turbo'ing though! Someone by me has one turbo'd, standard engine with a decomp plate, GT3076 and STANDARD managment, made 433bhp on the dyno and about 470lb/ft.
Goes like FUCK!

no, mate, ive read most of the shit on the forum, you clearly are just a fag, you think you know stuff but you dont, it just gets boring!
I really wanna know why you think a 106 gti isnt realible? Why because its french....thats just poor!
Anyway back to topic, I seriously don't know why you wouldnt consider one Lozi, a 106 GTI is a wee little cracker of a car
I have to agree tho, the VR6 sounds the bollocks when its getting hammered but there nothing special, you can even get mk4 GTI's cheap now, a Dirty diesel version is the bussiness with a remap!

Have you considered a Mk4 GTi Turbo? Bit of haggling might see one for similar money now. And more potential for tuning. The Mk3 cars are getting a bit long in the tooth now.

Or even a 306 Gti-6

Mk4 1.8T is as common as fuck nowadays and really don't like them. I've had one in my focus before (132bhp 140ft.lbs) but must have been a standard one. I like the 306 GTi-6 but didn't suggest it because I wouldn't have thought you could get a good one for that price. E36 BMWs that aren't M3s could be gotten decently for around that price Pistonheads suggests. But I've always liked the VR6 so would probably go for one myself. There are later spec models too with more power iirc and different engine codes? Heard that mentioned before somewhere.
