The black top 2 litre has better pistons (mahle) that will take over 300bhp, it also has under piston oil jets. Not sure if the 1.8 has them though.

ib5 doesn't like a lot of torque from what i've read, depends on your power goals.

2.0 is best as its bigger to start with, will require different pistons like 2ltr xe ones as they sit lower in the bore which lowers your compression, as for flywheel if yout using mfi then standard rst one with uprated clutch will be ok you just have to drill the flywheel holes out to 11mm iirc as the bolts are bigger, hope this helps.

Whilst your at the scrappy grab a 1.8 escort fiesta zetec sump and oil pick up pipe as you will need this if fitting into a erst.

That's correct..

The 1.8 is technically the strongest block, however the 2L block is fine at 500bhp, so it's fairly irrelevant.

Didn't know you could use XE pistons thought it was only LET ones?
On another note i have a few mates that run std blacktop pistons @ 18psi and never gone wrong.

is that because the zetec was designed as a 1.8 ?

Yeah, I guess. The 2L block has siamesed bores which don't offer as-good cooling as the 1.6 and 1.8, but like I say you don't hear of 2L ones failing, even at big power!

Apparently (I say that because Im yet to try myself) the XE pistons in a 2.0 zetec block with a CVH head gives a nice and low CR, with a Zetec head, its around 8.3:1.

And the 2.0 Zetec block has piston cooling jets
