Is this related to your previous post about Home Cinema Danny? What is it you're looking to buy?
As above, most stuff I'd say would be closer to 70-80% depreciation. Everything gets superceded so quickly with new models every year, it's only Ebay that makes you think your stuff is worth anything!

70%????? maybe I should look at the high end stuff then and pick up a real deal.. I guess at the moment the higher end products will be taking more of a knock.

I can get the Onkyo HTR518 5.1 AV Receiver used for £135 delivered but I have seen it new for £190, this will do everything I want but I had a budget in might of around £270-300 on receiver... do I buy this as was only after 5.1 anyway and put more money in speakers.?

I had to do a quick google to check the model but it looks a really good one for the price!
This place works out £175 with the VAt, new [didn't look at delivery?]. http://www.avsl.co.uk/shop/htr518-bl...06-p-9598.html
I think it's worth spending on some good speakers and budget at the VERY least 10% for decent cabling and connections

They estimate shipping at £8 so its around £183 with vat total.
It does look to do the right things, I just had the TXSR606 in my mind though but thinking they are features I dont really need. The misses aint happy about 5 speakers and a sub let alone 7!!!haha.
It does add the speaker budget and cabling like you mention. HMMM!!!!!

WELL I gone and done a deal on the Onkyo HTR518 5.1 AV Receiver, its 2 months old with the purchase invoice and has 22months warranty left on it. Paid £130 so couldn't really turn it down.
No need to decide on some decent 5.1 surround speakers and sub. They need to look nice or be small if that makes sense to keep the misses happy. any ideas?

I personally see electrical goods as comsumables and will only replace them when they break so depreciation is not a factor for me. The reason whythey do depreciate so much is because as soon as you buy the new model, they bring a 'newer model out after a few weeks or so. Same with phones. So if you want to be upto date and 'down with it' it will cost you fortune

The funkiest looking "small" speakers, in my opinion are the egg shaped KEFs! Richer sounds are doing the ones below for £399.99 [with a Sub], so you should be able to pick them up for £250 used? Someone I know uses them and they pack a punch considering the size! [they come in silver too if your missus likes shiny things]. Read some reviews though in case they're not what you're after.

paid £1700 for my 50" lg plasma about 2 1/2 years ago and now you can get the new equivalent model for £700 brand new. Means it would be worth no more than £200-£300.
You could nearly get one of the top of the range pioneers for £1700 now. Thats next on my list next sep anyway

cheers Paddy, they look quite nice, will have a look at some reviews, personally some nice floor standers would be nice but dont think she'd go for it.

They certainly have to be integrated into the right room and wouldn't suit most people's homes, including mine! Not my bag either for a living room set-up but if choice is limited to something small [e.g if your missus doesn't want massive things like Danny's, or you want surround in a bedroom] there isn't much better available imo.
If you're going to use the same speakers for CDs/iPods etc. you will be best off with floor standers. As you probably know, the amp you're buying is capable of just transmitting stereo and you'll get a MUCH better sound with a decent set of floorstanders as they're able to cope better with the full range of sound.
I bought my Acoustic Energy set-up a few years ago now and it was quite a few quid at the time, I just had a look on the bay and this is basically the same set-up [but I stupidly went for a darker finish ] makes me sick looking at the price though BASTARDS
If you can swing it, that is a phenomenal set-up for around £250? The KEF won't come close for the punchy sound and you may not even need a sub [lik I said, I fucked mine a while ago and I haven't missed it much, the floorstanders kick out a fair amount of bass which is fine for most music and car chases in films]
To be honest though, for the money now to replace my set up I'd be looking at some of the Mordaunt Short 900 series stuff, which are great for stereo and a bit more refined.

Paddy those AE's would be idea, they'll actually go with furniture also! lol, think it might be a case of me buying it all and installing it while she out, then its done! haha.
will keep an eye on the AE's, postage a little steep but only 2hrs away so could collect, will make a 'quality' bargain system.
I like the look of the mordaunt short 900 series. theres some infinty orous packages on ebay also which get good ratings.
