Default Audi. Great cars, but my GOD who designs them?!?!?!

Seriously, do people that design cars nowadays understand ANYTHING about cars?

First, had this in this morning;

Proper beast! Lovely lovely car, but what a FUCKER to get the screen out of! Bonnet struts have to be removed just to get the scuttle out, and the gap between the "floating screen" (meaning it has no trim around it) and the body was about 2mm all the way round, and the glass was touching the dash on the inside

Later this afternoon, a nice little A2 to do. Should be simple right? Little hatchback, simplistic design approach?

Oh no....

Yup - you even have to take the poxy bonnet off just to get the scuttle off

lol, okay so it's not a mission to get it off, but what kind of design is that

Anyway, loved the R8. Although I've realised if I ever win the lottery I can't have one - even with the seat on it's lowest and ALL the way back, with my foot on the pedals the steering wheel still hits my knees lol.......

Oh, and the R8... The rear screen is glass, but there is no engine cover. So if that breaks, thousands of tiny pieces of glass are going ALL OVER that engine, down the side of it, under it, in the cambelts, breathers - EVERYWHERE...... Another stupid design

Well it's not that often you change a screen, a lot out there 10+ years old, so hardly a regular thing.
Maybe form over function slightly granted, but hardly a service item a windscreen.
That glass over engine could be treated or something so little bits don't go everywhere, they may have thought of that, are Germans.

I dunno, I wouldn't say it's THAT uncommon..... We do do about 2.5 million screens a year lol.....

But no, the rear glass isn't treated in any special way....

We also thought it was funny that it was heated. With the dirty great V8, you wouldn't need a heater element!

Why am I complaining? Err, cos I can?

And yes I get paid to do this - what does that have to do with anything? I'm not complaining about changing the screens at all, in fact it wasn't even a complaint - it was more an observation that whilst the cars are great, the designers aren't entirely clued up on how cars work in the real world, and that some of the designing is a bit bonkers!

Very few cars seemed to have been designed with the thought that anyone would change any glass in my experience maybe that was the midges eating me at the time

I'm trying to get back into autoglass as well

As for AG's - times are getting tight pal, and the company are looking for any excuse to kick people out, so it's gamble coming back....

My mate worked out of paisley til they closed now Glasgow and he says its getting a bit like that. Boys said he used a longknife to take out a screen to get him the sack (probably to save their jobs) I was so close to going to training but due to circumstances I left before and I kick myself over it. I could even be self employed now.
I loved the work and I got about due to the area I live meeting all types of people too.
I work for Travis Perkins/Keyline and I'm not in the most stable industry right now

Screens are hardly a service item - you don't hear much about pannel beaters complaining about how bonding new wings on is hard work

hehehehe

I didn't say it was a service item, not was I complaining about how hard or not it is to replace a windscreen on a car.... In fact, as I already pointed out, I actually wasn't complaining about anything at all - just an observation that the designs behind somethings are daft as fuck..

the issue is with anything like a car, boat, and aircraft especially. everything is designed by different people, so when you get an engine package with all ancillaries designed by one bloke and an engine bay and front panel and radiator position designed by some other cunt, things can clash and cause problems!

obviously its impossible for one person to design a hole car, as as cars get more complicated its only ever gonna get worse.

Must be related to the Ford designers, who put fuse boxes in places where all the rain gathers!

You missed my point...

The design is like that for a reason - you are NOT the reason however.

COst effective production / aero dynamics are the simple reasons
