Default Got clutch done, garage trying to pull a fast one

Hello

took my car in this morning to have the clutch replaced, was quoted £170 inc vat, happy days

went to pick it up and they wanted £199, i told them that they quoted me £170 and he said to me they never give a price with the VAT on. i argued with them and said thats not right, i give prices for jobs everyday and thinks its a bit daft if you dont add the VAT on?

anyway they werent going to let me take the car but i did and they want me to go back on tuesday and pay, i dont want to cos i think they are being well out of order here

what would you do?

Don't think you have a leg to stand on.

Next time ask if thats the total amount, or do it yourself.

If its an idependent garage (ie not a main dealer) then in my experience they never quote including vat.
I'm not going to defend them on that - I think it's wrong and they are too lazy to do the maths - but thats how it is.
Unless you got a quote in writing I think you will be £199 poorer.

a lot of places give prices without the vat, i always tell people a few times that the price is without vat otherwise they only hear the said price & take that as a total.

Quotes to public SHOULD be inc. V.A.T. as you've been advised.

technically it should be £199.25.

17.5% of £199 is more than 17.5% of £170, hence why you're workings are wrong.

but anyway, the garage is right, especially if he wrote + vat as you say

Arsed it's like 29 quid......... TBH I always presume it DOESN'T include VAT and that's for two reasons, 1) You never get caught short, and 2) It usually is 99% of the time.

Most garages in my experience quote before vat - saying "£100 + VAT" or something.

You should always assume its before VAT -and if he has wrote " + VAT" on the quote then you can't argue.

The garage has done nothing wrong.

I was under the understanding that all consumer services/goods had to have the price quoted including VAT... however I don't have a reference for that so it could be complete bollocks

It is illegal to quote a price to a member of the public excluding vat. Simple.

Yup, correct, compaines are only allowed to quote without VAT to trade.

But for the sake of £30...

been in the motor trade all my life and worked for main dealers most of it. i never have quoted prices inc v.a.t. it's just one of those unwritten rules i guess.

when i worked for car dealers i would often get people using the "i thought the price included v.a.t" as i expect your mechanic has many times also.
even got "i've brought the exact money with me" only to see the guy on the burger van outside then!

offer them the original price as cash, but if they insist on the VAT then pay by cheque.

Then

Next time ask the right questions before assuming otherwise,if necessary get it in a written quote so you have proof of what was told to you before you go a head with the job.
