Default 1.8 turbo diesel engine

how hard would it be to get a bit of extra power out of one of these engines in a mk4 escort

Your not going to see megga improvment for your money what ever you do really.

could try upping the fuel and wind up the turbo, maybe a chip (if it they had them that old)

there was a feature a few years back in fast ford, of a mk3 fiesta with a 1.8 diesel that did 10 second 1/4's so it is possible if u have money.

as with most answers to this sort of question, the usual answer is its cheaper to replace the engine with a bigger one than fanny around trying to tune the existing one.

i remember seeing that fiesta and thought it was a standard engine but may be wrong, its just an idea at the moment but have got a mk4 escort estate that i was thinking of using as a track day car,its only got a 1.4cvh in it at the moment with an auto box,i just thought that with a turbo diesel engine it would be cheapish if it goes wrong to replace it and also as its diesel it should have a bit more grunt out of corners than the 1.4

Err .....no!!

i take it you have never experienced the POWER of a 1.8td ford

Youd be better throwing in a cheap 1.6 cvh with a cam in it, or even a rst lump as they are fairly cheap these days.

but even saying that the mk4 estate aint gna be desirable round a track.

As along the same lines as the engine tuning answer. it will probably be benificial and cheaper in the long run to sell the mk4 estate and buy a car already more suited to a track.

Ive heard lots of people picking up cheap as chips clios and having a right laugh on the track

ive got a rst combi van as my daily driver and didnt really want to go that route for a track car,im just about to start converting my estate in my sig to 4wd cossie so ive got a full set of koni suspension and poly bushes coming off that plus its not to hard to put the rear anti roll bar on,i didnt buy the estate for this purpose but it would be different using it as a track car

if you fit the TDI engine like i have then they are ok for power

i have tweaked the on boost fueling and wound out the pump regulator and it will piss all over a 3i and 1.6 petrol focus and is on par with a mk5 TDI golf also with the regulator out it will hit 130 ! (on speedo)

does about 30 MPG with the fuel tweaked and 50 MPG with it standard

as for handling the estate uses the same suspension set up as the HB but from experience i find the estate is slightly better balanced weight wise and with the TDI engine in and full trim they weigh 960kg

on a private track of course ! had to get a pic of it at 000000 miles also !

mine was originally a derv so i kept the same tank

the petrol tank wont have a return line for the diesel (unless its an injection tank) , but it shouldn't be too difficult to just run a pipe back to the tank though

or just source a derv tank

also , if you can , fit some baffles in the tank or a ' in tank ' swill pot thing , mine tends to get air in the diesel when cornering hard with less than half tank in
