I've only just joined as trying to find someone who can help me out. I have a puma and just recently found my boots soaked, realised my carpets are wet through, got the vax out and sucked out over a pint of water. It's only the drivers side, has reached through to the back behind drivers seat aswell. I am asuming there is a bung or (searched other sites and see (a gromet in the bulkhead) has been mentioned. I am a complete novice at car repairs etc so don't want to go ripping out the carpet or pay my garage to look if I can solve this myslef - is there anyone there...who can advise.

Could well be the battery tray - notorious on Fords. If thats rusted through thats the likely suspect.

I doubt it's the battery tray as that doesn't sit up to the bulk head on the Puma [like the old escorts].

If it's leaking drivers side, have a look around the back of the header tank. But just because it's leaking INTO the drvier's side doesn't mean it's coming through from there...

Check for leaks all along the bulkhead, holes etc. Check the seals around the front windscreen, maybe pour some soapy water around the edges and look for bubbles? Check seals on ALL the windows. Is there any water in the boot?

Possibly heater matrix?
Is the water actually water, or is it anti-freeze?
Is it slippery to the touch, and taste a bit (or get your bloke to lol) - if it's sweet, then its antifreeze.

thanks everyone - this site is great. yep checked battery tray and as Paddy says the battery doesn't sit at the bulk head, its over to the right hand, front side. I'll get my fella to help me with checking around window seal etc and try the soapy water thing. Checked theboot and thats ok (altho do any other puma owners have the problem of water dripping/pouring in the boot when you open the back up) so annoying!
AND thanks Ballin, I think its just water but will check out your anti-freeze idea.

Must be a common problem with Puma's as my other half's one has got the same.
Started in drivers side, then stopped getting wet there, but now it's wet in passengers side.!?!? wtf.!!

Any technical or common response would be appreciated, and hopefully it's not just a Devon thing.!!!............

Right then, MY KINDA TOPIC!!!!

I've been trying to source epic leaks in my mam's Puma for the past 6 months.....saying that, they have been there for about 2 years and I've just not got round to it!

1st leak that will appear - On the driver side, get on your hands and knees and look down towards the steering column. There's a big plastic grommit that normally comes loose right where the column goes into the engine bay. Simply silicon that and pull/push it back in place.

2nd leak that will appear - Again on the driver side, look to the right of the steering column and to the very top corner of the wheel well/firewall. The sealer that cover the welds split in time and allow a considerable amount of water in when it trickles down the inner wing.

3rd leak that will appear - on the passenger side, the same culprit as the top corner of the driver side.

4th leak that will appear - on the passenger side, more towards the middle of the well is where the pollen filter is sat above in the engine bay. Not so much the lid of the box that allows water in, but the box itself, underneath that allows leaks. Bare in mind, this is a very tight space and has 4 screws holding it in place to remove it and silicon back in place.

Hope that helps, so far there's no more leaks

Is it just me or has no-one read the first post.....her boot floor is wet - I've never heard of water travelling uphill before - i.e. from the footwell up into the boot - providing of course that the drivers footwell isnt on the same level as the boot - which I very much doubt!!!

I would look for signs of leakage on the boot area, boot seal etc - possibly rear light cluster seals aswell!

Also, have you had the door cards off at all?
If you have you may have damaged the polythene sheet that sits behind it, I fitted a new passenger door to my missus car but left the liner off and the passenger footwell flooded!
Also everything cochyn wrote is well worth looking for, I've has those issues too

If it is the boot you are talking about, then my mondeo used to leak through the grommet where the wires go from the car through to the bootlid. The water would run onto the headlining, down one side, then get the floor wet. Only way i found where it was coming from was to get in the car and get someone to run a hosepipe over the car and see where it is coming from! If it doesn't smell and your coolant level isn't dropping then it won't be heater matrix as stated above.

Thanks to you all and sorry for mix up earlier - yep us women have to get footwear mentioned (they are nice boots too!) BUT the water is definately in the drivers side foot well. I will be going through the list from COCHYN and hopefully will find the problem. Considering all of this the Puma is a great car and I do love it.

As Cochyn says, normally its a leak from upper right corner behind the dash. To see it you'll have to lay in the footwell with your head by the pedals. Its worth moving the header tank so you can see under it and checking that the area behind the plastic panel at the back of the engine bay hasnt filled up with leaves and stuff. There is a drain flap behind the tank and it gets blocked that just makes things worse - Mk4/5 Fiesta's and Puma's are all the same. In the area behind the header tank, check the seal along the inner wing too. If you cant see anything in these places, the damn things have been known to leak through the panel joint under the header tank, where the inner wing meets the 'shelf' at the back of the engine bay.
