Default Doea anybody know the legal gross towing capacity of a 2wd sapf cossie?

As title,

I am looking to replace my daily driver S2 and a cossie would be the obvious choice for me. I need it to be able to tow my other S2 track car with trailer hence the question!

I was looking at an evo but have been told they are not legally ment to tow. Besides the fact I am a ford man and I know cossies reasonably well so I know I can do any work required to keep one of these up and running.

A mondeo TDCI does tick all the boxes with a 1800kg capacity but I just dont want to sign up to a diesel estate, as it just against my religion!

Thanks in advance!

the weight your towing (inc trailer) cant be more than the weight of the car pulling it (i think). apprantly a cossie weigh's 1240kg thought they were more than that but not sure

I use the train to get to work so reliablity is not the major issue! I wasnt looking to buy a concourse car something around the £5k mark would be fine.

I thought that also but a Mondeo can tow 1800kg as quoted by ford so I am not sure that rule of thumb is correct.

Untill the injection sytem goes tits up and writes the car off! Besides, the towing is something the car needs to be able to do but I still want a quick car to get in daily and make me smile!

Is the motor back in yours yet mate?

Cheers!

I have no doubt a cossie will pull the weight, I just want to be legal, especially to cover the insurance on the track car it will be towing should the worse happen.

Caravans are pretty light weight.

Although I bet you had more than a few broken items of crockery! With a cossie coming on hard boost! LOL!

Not to 400bhp you cant! LOL!

I have the Mrs Audi A2 for the you only need it to get you from A to B type stuff! So it really can be a silly fast fuel hungry monster, just a silly fast fuel hungry monster that can tow a track car from time to time.

Getting both for my budget is the real problem!

Eh? That's odd. I've seen a couple of Evos with tow bars.

I nearly bought a tow bar for my own car off Russ Swift (as in the stunt driver fellow). He used his Evo 9 to pull one of the cars he uses at his show (think it was a BMW Mini, on a Brian James car trailer).

I would be very confident that my Evo would tow very well. It makes boost early and pulls well. Reliable doing it too.

I'm going to have to look into the weights and legality side of things now, but really can't see why an Evo would be illegal to tow

Don't discount the Mondy TD, lovely cars to drive and as said do go well

i think this is one of them grey ares. my mate got done for towing a car trailer with a mk3 astra van there was nothing on the trailer it was that fact that the ''could'' take the weight. which in my opinon is stupid as there was nothing on it.

Exactly mate, The trailer I am buying can tow a gross capacity of 2500kg but will be replated by the supplier to state 1800kg to prevent what you stated above happening.

I know that Evo's cossies and the like, inc my 2.8 capri are all more than capable of towing but the majority are towing more than they are allowed hence the no payment from insurance company if I have n accident and I imagine an appearence in front of a magistrate!

Alot of people are blissfully unaware of the regulations regarding towing capacity.

The maximum weight is stamped on the VIN plate

And why oh why use a Cossie to tow anything Heretic!

Anyone with a Cossie should be able to give you the train weight off the chassis plate. Subtract the weight of the Cossie from the train weight and you have your towing capacity.

With new cars, they have to be type approved for towing. No type aproval means that car cannot legally be equiped with a tow bar and used for towing on the public road.

I'm deffo going to look into this more. Brief search on the MLR brought up loads of Evo with tow bar stories.

And this pic:

Just seen this though:

we were going to have a towbar fitted with the intentions of buying a caravan for taking to dragstrip weekends etc. When Maz phoned the towbar place they asked if was a uk spec car, when she replied yeah, he said sorry, Mitsubishi have stated that evo 8 not suitable for towing, and our insurance would be void if we towed with it and had an accident, but imports are allowed.

Dave

So import Evos might bew ok, but my UK spec Evo won't be. Hmm.

last time I used a Saphire Cossie to tow (a master craft speedboat) I only got about 80 miles before the h/g blew. fair enough it was quite a heavy boat ( 2 old tons, oops!). had to do the remaining 310 miles towing with the old 1.8 lx (this was 1994).

dont recommend towing with a cossie, plus with the weight of a decent trailer, eg brian james 4 wheels, plus your S2, you stand a good chance of being pulled by the vosa morons.

Its not looking good is it!

Perhaps I should just by an old transit recovery truck, just to fully finish my extensive piss the neighbours off operation, which has been gathering considerable momentum of late!

I just dont have the faith to drive my S2 to and from track days! I have a feeling in my waters that gearboxes may be an issue!

Its looking like I have only one option! A TDCI Mondeo FFS!!! They are very good cars for what they do but I really dont want to sell my rapid daily driver S2 and get into one of them!
