Default track day drivers-tyre question?

hi guys,

when you do a trackday how many sets of wheels/tyres do you take?

reason im asking is because my r888's are worn out on my m3 and i got a set of world touring car slicks from ebay so will hopefully be using them on my next trackday-weather permitting.

what options do i have for damp/wet days?are wets easily available?does marco do them?

i have got a set of m3 wheels with good mich pilot tyres-would they suffice for a wet day?

or should i just go and get a set of r888's-just seeing if i can save some cash somewhere as i have just bought a new kitchen!

or any other alternatives?.........

I took 4 sets to Croft and only used one.. slicks

I love the 888's Jay and Tim commented on how good they seemed on mine at weekend, as he's bought some for his. Plus you have the bonus that you can drive home on them afterwards (if you haven';t ruined them, know what your like)

The only other set i took to ND was my Uniroyal Rainsports, just in case - they are quite good and were cheap for my 15's
think brad with the general xr4x4 and some of the other track lot told me to try uniroyals

Marco has the proper wets, but i paid Ł33 a tyre for the uniroyals and proper ones were like Ł140 each and i'm not that good to need anything like that lol

same here, 2.0 zetec's are piss cheap.

am also interested to find out about tyres, dont my 1st track day at ford fair, done 4 sessions on some half worn federals and absolutely killed them. werent bad tyres but as i was getting used to the car and track more and more at the end of the day they were struggling.

i run 195-45-16's.

was thinking of some eagle F1's for tthe next day as i use my car day to day on the road at the minute. have used them before and found them really sticky in the dry and awesome in the wet.

My A048's certainly weren't hard wearing!! Did one airfield track day on them when NEW and fucked two in the day!

Don't know whether to wait for the Dunlop DZ03 or go for 888's next?

jim i bought the impreza to do track days, just always been to busy with work

the first set was for the ring ( remember that conversation)

the second set was 24 quid on ebay and 10 quid postage,, i couldnt help myself

same reason why i have 4 sets of wheels too, 3 sets for track ( save swoping tyres about all the time) and another set for road use

im more of a "planner" first rather than just take it on track then see what i need

im also about to spend 2k on suspension for the car

ref tyres, I have only done a few trackdays, I find I can easily kill a set of 4 toyo proxies in one day (open pit so the car is in constant use). Now have a set of slicks and another 2 sets of wheels needing tyres. Will prob just get one set shod and take those and the slicks to trackdays.

A set of wheels with full slicks and a set of road wheels with decent road tyres(PS2's) or cut slicks (DO2G's) is all i've ever bothered with.

Andy, hows things mate? How did you find the DZ02s? I've actually been prefering my PS2s over the Yokos, going on some recent track days. :S

Hi Nath I'm very good cheers, hope you guys are well too, tell the old boy I said hello!
I really do rate the PS2's get the pressure right and they are a brilliant tyre wet or dry. I did Croft this year in the Mitchelins and apart form a little roll over(basicaly due too pushing too hard to soon on lower preassure's) the tyres themselves were and still are spot on. The initial turn in isnt quite the same with the construction of the side wall being less stiff than on the DO2G's.
The DO2G's were a fantastic tyre dont get me wrong but I only saw 3000miles from them - so they do end up being costly.

Once the PS2's are done i'm pretty sure I'll replace them with the same again, grip wise they are spot on wet or dry and wear wise they have been all I could have hoped for and more.

Have been running 15" R888 on the Nissan Primera GT, but have just had a set of 17" Comp MO's arrive so i can get some used 17" slicks for them.

Other than that for wet days, a set of 16" Marangoni zeta linears have done ace service for the last 12 months

If you are knackering a set of tyres in a day, you're on the wrong compound or something IMHO

PS

Im with Linsay, My opinion is that the best option is 888s for the dry and RS2's for the wet, and both sets are road legal so you can drive home on either of them, great combination.

Then i will be pleased to supply you with fresh 17" Slicks

As for how long tyres last , you will be aware that performance means that longevity is sacrificed , this is why i sell Thousands of used ex Touring car tyres every year as people wont compromise on the performance of their car once its set up on these .

sadly no .
theres not been a National series that uses a big enough quantity of smaller sizes ,i.e 15" ,16" for a number of years so beware when buying used ones ! Even 17" is being superceded by 18" on roadcars that go trackdaying , i can now supply these once the season starts tho .

What money do the 17" go for and what is the smallest size?

(im not personally after any at the moment, but still interested in what they sell for and im sure others might be after a set so its useful for them to know)

235/610x 17" is the size , ive used these on 8" and 9" Rims , anything smaller or bigger would be a problem .
Delivered prices are to Mainland UK Ł167.44p next day inc vat , all my tyres come direct from the Teams and are fresh , not from scrap bins or left outside for years on top of containers like some of the e-bay dealers . I accept cards ,paypal and even cash

http://www.touringcarspares.com/part...php?cat=wheels

I have fresh stocks arriving later this week .

why dont you think they'll fit then ? Ive customers with Sapphire race cars that use my 9x17" rims all round and dont have issues ?? If youve the right 8" rim and about the right offset they should do ??

It's a shame the Clio cup no longer use 15" - I used to run their old slicks on track days, scary scary when cold, but shit hot once done a couple of laps.
