The knock is know as diesel knock. Black smoke can be a timing issue but can also be caused by a blocked air filter, blocked fuel filter can also cause fuel timing issues. When was it last serviced?

Take it the glow plug light isn't coming on?

If it was serviced by Ford then I'd replace the fuel filter and check the air filter. This should solve it, if not then post back.

That sounds like diesel knock to me. Not a mechanical issue.

Common problem on the injector pumps is the advance solenoid. This can be replaced without removing the pump itself. It is connected up (wiring) under the top cover of the pump (remove it, might have to cut the 2 wires IIRC) and is bolted into the pump at the very bottom by 2 bolts, then slides out. If it won't come out, the injector pump is breaking up and will need to be removed and remanufactured.

Sounds ok for a diesel van to me. Or have you only recently noticed the noise?

I could go along with the air filter or fuelissue

Less boost=smokey
More retarded timing=smokey
