I fancy getting into it but don't know much about how it all works at the mo.
Anyone recommend any books / websites to read up on it first?
What are the do's and dont's
What websites / software are good to manage your portfolio.
Cheers,
Jim.

Spread betting is easier and quicker in my opinion. We have talked about it before. Do a search mate.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Before you start with cash, pick a portfolio, on paper not for real.
Follow the share prices, sell / buy , on paper not for real, when you think it's right.
If after 6 months you've still got at least the original value, think about spending real cash, if you've lost money give up the idea altogether.

Stocks and Shares = Risk
how much risk are you prepared to take?
split your investing into 3 groups.
High risk
Medium risk
Low risk.
the tricky bit is now finding out which investments are high, medium or low. Seek help from a trusted, qualified friend, group or broker. even with as little as Ł25 per month, you have to start somewhere.
Try not to move investments to and fro, that usually costs money.
good luck.
Porkie
I always looked at spread betting as being too dangerous for me. Do you have any good personal experiences or stories?

It's a bloody good guide!! Just not a guarantee.
Now is a bad time for a new person to start buying. Lot more difficult to pick the right ones than it was say 18 to 24 months ago.
Retail, banks, building... none likely to pick up soon.
Mining and commodities are already high.
I'd advise you look into spread betting as mentionned above. Try tradindex.com for a MEGA simple start, then try IGindex.
Betting small amounts on the FTSE going down would be a good trade to start with.
Let us know how you do, or if you want more discussion.
Ralph.
