i dont need anything amazing, its just my runaround hence the choice of semi.....only thing which might have a say to the choice is its done 150k and does a lot of short journeys...

any advice Guy/Simon?

thanks
Ballin,

Youve picked some good oils there. The 10w-40 grade would be the way to go with that mileage and is also what BMW recomend also.

Choice of brand, its difficult, the Silkolene and the Fuchs are affectivley the same oil and the motul is of equal quality, so its a case of personal choice.

Cheers

Guy.

This is fine for running in, or mineral oil will help the bedding in process, if you use a full synthetic running in you risk varnishing etc.

Run in for about 1000 miles or so.

What do you plan to use after running in is complete?

Cheers

I got a few mates who are quite clued up with big boost engines and theyve told me to put castrol rs 10-60 in my series 2 rst which I have just re-ringed,big ends and mains.I only get 16-17psi when the oil temp is 80 degrees and at idle. Its well run in as well. Why is this oil not right oilman?

guys read the advice above, saves the poor bloke having to repeat himself a hundred time!!!!

starturbo, castrol rs is not a true synthetic, yet it is priced as one. for the same money they are saying there are better oils (Silkolene Pro S)

rabmcS2, same again if you look above, the Pro S!!!

I am missing something here I think.I have been led to believe that the 1600 cvh is not a close tolerance engine and therefore a synthetic oil is no good for it?What is silkolene pro s?

Tolerance is related to viscosity not type of basestock (ie synthetic, semi-synthetic, mineral etc), for wide tolerance engines use a thicker oil, i.e. not 0w or 5w but 10w or 15w.

Silkolene PRO S 10w-50 or Silkolene PRO R 15w-50 are perfect for this application.

Cheers

Hi Simon.I get the tolerance relationship to viscosity thing ok.I always thought though that synthetic oils were usually the ones with the lower first figures i.e 0W or 5W.I think I am right in believing that newer engines such as an rs focus which is close tolerance is ok to use synthetic in.My 1600 cvh has done about 4000 miles since i put new big ends, main bearings and piston rings in and I have been using rs 15-60.Though initially i did run it in for 1000 miles with millers mineral oil.I have taken a great deal of interest in this coz having blown an engine because of low oil pressure (big end) I dont want it to happen again. It does concern me that even with castrol rs 15-60 I still have what I believe to be low pressure.Hot,idling, oil temp at 80 degrees C its only16 psi? What could I use to bring the pressure up mate.sorry to be a pain but wanna really understand this?

The key here is quality.

A synthetic 10w-40 is far better than a semi or mineral oil. Better lubrication, heat resistance, cooling and cleaning and longer drain periods.

For this one I would suggest you look at the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 Pro R 15w-50 or the Motul 300V 15w-50.

Tech data here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Sorry missed it first time.

I would suggest the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50, this ester based full synthetic would be ideal. They assist the additive pack in a motor oil formulation because they are surface-active (electrostatically attracted to metal surfaces), so they help to reduce wear and friction.

They are fluid at very low temperatures and at high temperatures they are very chemically stable and have low volatility (don’t evaporate away).

They also help to prevent hardening and cracking of oil seals at high temperatures making them ideal for tuned turbo engines.

Cheers

Guy.

1.8 ZVH. Stg2 Turbo. Track/Fast road. Around the 200bhp mark.

It's in an XR2, which will confuse matters in terms of age!

To run in use a good 15w-50 semi synthetic.

Once run in I would go for the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50.

You need a 5w-30, most of these are semi synthetic but we would suggest a fully synthetic as it is modded.

Have a look at the Motul 300v 5w-30 and the Motul 8100 5w-30.

Cheers

Hi mate,

2wd Saff Cossie, 350bhp and 350ft/lb?

And if you recommend anything other than Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w 50 (which you obviously will) then could you please state why as I'd be very interested to know

Cheers,

You dont need an oil, you need a miracal to stop it blowing up

Seriously tho, what boost would you need to run to make 170bhp from a 1.3 A series turbo ?

A decent 5w-40 full synthetic should be fine.... go 10w-50 if the oil temps are excessive.

These can be very fussy, you will need a good mineral 15w-50 changed very often becuase of that the gearbox does to it. It also does not like most synthetics.

However

There is one synthetic which works very well in the mini engine/gearbox setup which is the Silkolene Pro R 15w-50, for a hard used/tracked car this would be my choice.

Cheers

Guy.
