i have only ever used bike helmets, but i'd recommend an open face helmet as a full face generally gets too hot

I use an open face Sparco to race. It's one of the cheaper ones but is approved by the MSA for motorsport. It was 250 quid or so. I got it from a motorsport place in south west London (GGR? EGR? something like that). I would say you don't need to get anything sophisticated but you should go and try it on because it needs to fit well. I also wear a fireproof balaclava that makes me look like a terrorist but that's probably overkill for trackdays.
