Looks like i have......
been the victim of card cloning.
Some bastard has took £1,200 from my account yesterday and upped my overdraft limit to 3k. The walked into Tooting branch of Halifax and did it all over the counter.
Feeling quite shit right now Just got off the phone from the bank who have put it all thru to the fraud department.

That's horrible and sorry to hear it Helen!
Mine was done a few years ago... ALSO in Tooting and I heard something on the Radio the other day about Tooting having the highest rate of identity fraud crime.
I say we just bomb Tooting. Problem solved.

I'd defo raging, in fact spitting flames.
I found out more from the woman on the phone, they have used my new card that was sent to me in January, which i never received, i was wondering where it was as the card i have expires in June.
Fraud is going to contact me within 48 hours.

Defo wont be from now on !
Cash purchases for me now.
You alway read about it happening to other people you just never think it will happen to you. I know i will get it backkvia the bank etc as i'm covered for it, its just the sinking feeling you get when you realise what happened to your account.

This is why I think the stripe on the cards should not be there, as we don't use it anymore, cos we have chip and pin now. Trouble is, other countires, i,e America have not caught up yet, and this leaves US open to fraud because if you don't have the magnetic stripe you can't then use your card in other countries

Its NOT card cloning in this instance, and its nothing to do with petrol stations
As you mentioned, to take money out over the counter, they MUST have an original card, as the cashier in a bank isnt going to fall for an argos premier points card with someone's credit card info copied onto it.
Relax, as Dan says, you'll get the money back

Barclays have started a good system for trying to sort out the problems abroad. You can't actually use your card when in foreign climbs, UNLESS you advise them before hand that you are going abroad. Trouble is, they didn't notify anyone of these changes and both Lee and myself couldn't use our cards at the Nurburgring this month . Luckily a quick phone-call to the UK resolved the issue .

Ask yourself this - has Dave been dressing in your clothes (again) and has YUM got any new shiny bits on her??
Dont worry - you'll get it all back. Its happened to me several times now. Nothing more than a slight inconvenience having to fill out a piece of paper or two.

this is becoming so widespread, i'm hearing of more and more people it happened to. this hardly used to happen with the old "signing" method but since chip n pin its a piece of piss for the card to be cloned.
most (if not all) of the banks freeze your account if you use the card abroad these days. we had major probs with natwest when in italy, even though we told them we were there they kept freezing our cards/accounts all the time!

They should stand your dd until it's sorted
As your card that was stolen would of had to be activated by some mean's of checking that it is you that has it.
Just kick off about there security.

i'm with the hsbc and, due to lots of money going in and out of my acount, they stopped the card and called the police
which ould have been great if the card had been stolen, but i was in the middle of buying a house, a car and going on holiday so the last thing i needed was to be with a frozen bank acount while they "investigated money laundering"
when they do something right they get a bad rep
when they don't do anything right they get a bad rep
sometimes you can't win
but at least they know it's not you and the cctv in the bank will hopefully help cath the perptrators

I was at my suppliers last week & a transaction for 6 quid got stopped on my business card.....very embarrassing especially as I knew I had plenty on there so couldnt understand the problem - after a series of security questions inbetween myself & the merchant they let it through but them told me to ring my bank. I did this & it turns out they had a load of credit card details stolen - mine being one of them so were checking that it wasnt being used fraudulently....
...like I said, very embarrassing but in a way I'm glad they did check. Although now I havent got a business card to use until they send me a new one out!!!

But TBH the petrol station ones are a thing of the past more or less now too, as with chip and pin you never hand your card over to them at most petrol stations so they can copy it in the first place these days, used to be an absolutely massive industry a few years back though, not just at petrol stations but ANYWHERE you hand them your car essentially, so restaurants and shops too.
