you've prob heard they offer more turn in..... makes the car feel sharper...... ford made the 2wd saff easier to drive on the road.....
depends what you want the car for....
sometimes an easy to drive car is more fun... less nervous...... are you after a track car or a car to drive to work and put your boot down every now and again....

Huge improvement compared to the Sapphire ones. Actually puts the roll centre where it should be and not 6" underground like the Sapphire's . Problem is, that the steering becomes VERY direct, which most normal people hate, as they are used to it feeling slow and stable

No, my car was rock stable at 180+mph. The instability is all down to the geometry settings - i.e. I bet your car has been set to the Ford recommendations of running the front and rear parrallel, which when driven at speed and the bushes compress / deflect, forces the geometry to toe out, which makes the car wander all over the place at speed.

What about the 3dr front ARB is that any better than a Saph's ARB? Mine is currently poly bushed throughout on the front

Escos front ARB is considerably stiffer and thicker, somthing mike would like no doubt ... Meant to be a good upgrade for cheap ŁŁ, need the arb clamps as well though.
might seem like a silly Q but 3 door/2wd saffs are completely different offsets to a 4x4 are they not? Could you fit 3 door hubs to a 4x4 saff cossie thats been converted to RWD , but kept all the 4x4 front engine x-member etc, and just left the stub shafts in to hold the hub together? or would the complete 2wd x-member need to be fitted?

I didn't think that the 4x4 front ARBs were interchangeable with the 2wd ones? However, at only 1mm difference and the fact that I believe the set-back is then all wrong, I wouldn't suggest it. I think perhaps you are getting confused with the Escort rear one, which is interchangeable and is 3.5 times stiffer than the 2wd Sapphire one .
I don't know the answer to you last question .

mike i thought the 3dr and 2wd ARB's were different, and 2wd were longer to allow more stability at higher speeds?
or maybe its vice versa, but thought they were different.
Bushes are the same though dan.

on the rear with a saff its a swap over, 3doors need mods
esc cos front arb is too wide to fit on 2wd crossmember and tca's. I managed it but a customer couldn't.

leave the 2wd front roll bar, these are the same as the rs500,
early 3 doors were recalled to have the rs500/ 2wd sapphire thicker roll bar fitted
later 3 doors had the thicker roll bar from the factory.
A good set up for a driving driver on a 2wd is 3 door front hubs and tca's rs500/2wd sapphire front arb, 4x4 rear arb
(not escort cossie) 2wd sapphire rear arms and hubs
1mm toe in all round.
you cannot fit a 4x4/ escort cossie front roll bar to a 2wd

You musn't confuse "handling" with "grip". The turn in on my Sapphire is on a different level to the Escort (due to the 3-dr hubs and TCAs). You can also take HUGE liberties with the Sapphire and provoke the rear end into the most lurid controllable slides.
The Escort would run rings around it at any track due to it's ability to lay the power down MUCH sooner and it's braking (also down to it's linked 4x4 system) is on another planet altogether. However, the Sapphire was the sweeter handling car, just with an engine that was too powerful for the chassis.
I would love to build a Sapphire track car, as I know what to do now (do a search for my "ultimate Sapphire" thread ), just to upset people that weren't expecting a shonky old taxi to go so well .
