AVG no longer free from 31st of May...
so has anyone got any pointers as to which free anti virus program I can download?
I'd like it to have the same sort of functions as AVG, ie runs in the background, updates itself and schedules for running...
thanking you

this is the first i've heard
it just says that there is a newer version out and it costs money to buy
i've still got norton running on my machine which updates regulalrly even though it's not the default anti v setup
and i've got search and destroy as well
they all run at various times of the night so no problems and if anything goes wrong it's always there for me in the morning to put right or check out

because the ones you pay for are no better and sometimes worse than free ones. On avast I had one virus that it couldnt get rid of, and that was because it was zipped up in a rar file with some dodgey software i downloaded (so my fault). Other than that, if something fishy enters the computer, it alerts me and sorts it all out for me.

Secondly, most are shite. Norton for example. Costs Ł40, makes your PC run like a sack of shit, is massively CPU intensive and sucks up half your RAM. And it doesn't find fuck all! AVG on the other hand, is free, has a very small footprint, doesn't guzzle your PC's resources and finds fucking everything - never once let me down on my PC....

If that was to me, then yeah. It wasn't on my computer, was on my mums. Norton was blocking it (even tho I had turned it off) so I removed it (cos Norton is shit) and the problem with it not installing seemed to be with the folder name - it refused to allow it to install into the default folder name. So I changed it and just added a 1 to the folder name and it installed fine

For several reasons. Half the virus's and trojans out there are written by the people that write and sell the pay-for antivirus programmes - there's no need for a cure if there isn't a problem is there?

I personally use avast, though I think Norton sometimes get a bit of unjustified stick. When it was just a virus scanner it was good, since its now a virus scanner, a spyware scanner, firewall etc.. it takes a lot of system resource. Probably the same as all the individual programs added up.

I was using AVG free but then it said updates would no longer be made after may the something so you have to download the newer version, nothing about paying for it?
Anyway all i want is a simple AV, not spyware/adaware all in one so i download Avast, the user interface is not as friendly as AVG was but as long as it works well and its free i dont care

AVG is shit always has been, good things aren't usually free. It will do for those times when you get a new pc and put it on until you get something better but those running it long term must be mental. Oh and that guy who says he hasn't had a virus in 4 years so it must be good, i'd be worried. (unless your pc has no connection). I'd prefer an AV to stop things regular rather than sit there not finding anything.
Nod32, Kasper and Trend micro are good ones.

they are trying to get you to upgrade to the newer version 8 at Ł50 a year so they are shutting down the services for the free 7.5
Never a truer word said Thrush
I'll give Avast a go

You are misreading it because they are wording it clever to get you to buy it. Basically, they say they will stop supporting version v7.5.
v8.0 is still free - see http://free.grisoft.com/ww.news.ndi-93835

I've upgraded to AVG FREE Edition v8.0 the other day & didnt have to pay a penny - but then you wouldnt would you as its called the FREE Edition! Would defeat the object of the program if you had to pay for it!! LOL!
AVG has always been spot on for me, all my customers have it on their PCs, servers, mail servers etc & viruses have never ever been a problem for me or any of my customers.
Why bother paying for something when the free edition that AVG quite happily provides FOC (so its not piracy either) works absolutely perfectly!!??

Don't talk such absolute fuckin rubbish! A personnal anti-virus program from AVG has been, and always will be free!
You probably have AVG 7.0 and had the upgrade message saying 'get AVG 8.0' and it costs 49.99...
Goto the AVG page and it's a download for company/server use, not personnal home pc use!
