Escort redone in same colour (mercury grey), bit of colour coding, no major bodywork, rear arches need some rust cut out and metal welded in, and sorting some minor rust and small dings etc......
Drive in drive out service... what's the ballpark figure I should be hearing when getting quotes?

Given that you'll use minimum £600 in paint and materials for a full paint, at £1500 you'll only be getting an average job. If you want the prepping to be perfect and the paintwork super flat, expect minimum £3K and upwards depending upon how much work is required to repair rot/dents/damage.

if you want it mint and good products used 3-4k if you want a shit job with no warrenty 1k..
people always forget these 2 main things when asking how much resprays are..
1. no body can give a quote over the internet or the phone! you need to see a car to be able to quote on a respray!
2. (the biggest thing) YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
I own my own bodyshop and sometimes peoples expectations are fookin rediculous!
And yeah it does cost at least 5-£600 on paint and materials to do a full good quality respray.

Yes £600 is the average cost of paint and materials for a full hit.
Forgot to say we do high quality bodywork as we have our own in house dalby oven, so I speak from first hand experiance.
You get exactly what you pay for.

Ade, its time mate that makes the difference between a £1500 job and a £4000 job.
It shows big time too. You look down the side of a £1500 job and it will look like a pond thats just had a stone thrown in! the £4k job will be flat like glass, but this takes a serious amount of time to do as the panels all have to blocked by hand rather than the DA. Remember too, that most old Fords are in seriously bad condition, and thus require much work to remove previous bad paintwork/repairs etc.

Yep, guess so....... but one of the main things that makes me not want to spend big money on paint is that I know for sure that cunts will innevitably wreck it by opening doors onto it and scuffing it in car parks. Never ceases to amaze me how often that stuff happens

Is your car really worth a £4000 paint job? If you have got a £1200 quote and you are happy and the place doing it is respectable then go for it. It wont be as good as a £4000 job, but then thats not what you paid for.

You dont always get what you pay for. Its not a case of the more you pay, the better the job when it comes to bodywork.
Ive known £500 worth of work be better than £1500 worth of work for the same job. £1000 re-sprays be better than £2000 ones. Its all down to the bodyshop and more importantly, the painter.
It always makes me laugh when people think the more you pay, the better the job. so they take it to the main dealer as they think they'll do the best job. Then, they end up getting their car painted by a trainee and it comes out looking like a mess. My mate had his BMW painted at BMW dealer and i think it was £1500 worth of work. A decent bodyshop could have done it for £500-£600 and it would have been a better job too.
A job is only as good as the person thats doing it.
Ask to see some of there work and work in progress. then ask to see the fininshed result. If your happy with that, then go for it.

i disagree that a £1500 job would be poor, it depends on overheads as to cost,, if a large company take it on then yes it could cost more..
but i have a guy close to me, who works on his own, no overheads, does plenty of tip top mint resto jobs on mustangs and e types etc, makes panels in fibreglass, infact does almost anything you could ever want, plenty of one off mag cover cars, he takes his time, no rush, his work is absolutly first class, and he will do a basic repaint, outside,no shuts, for £1500.....his finish is 10 times better than the mainstream shops ..

Pretty much agree with what S1RST says, but i do think to an extent you get what you pay for. Time wise for example, but if the place is good and takes pride in their work they will do it to a high standard anyway.
We would charge roughly £2k and you would get a job the same as whats being described as the £4k jobs.

Try owning an SLR, we charged i think about 20k odd to re-paint a load of the original coupe`s custom colours for some king or prince somewhere or other who has 10 off them!!! but tbh it would have been no different cost wise other than obviously needing ppl who have stripped them before doing it to a 3-4k job!!!
Agree with whats been said thou its the painter but also the people running the company that guarentee the job not just the cost
most accident repair places work on stupid hours per job now so to get it done alot of corners get cut as alot of painters rely on their bonus per job to make a decent wage so obviously the more they crank out the more they get!!! which means alot dont take the time and care they should unfortunatly.
1500-2k should get u a good job if you go somewhere that someone has had work done before and reccomends them

i got a quote today to get my escort painted and seen the owner put down £350 for materials. i have had a car painted here before and the work was second to none and the quote was no where near as much as a thought it would be to be honest

I agree that you can't go on cost alone, evidence of work and more importantly recomendation. You should be able to agree what to expect, and be confident that anything that is not up to scratch will be corrected.

My place would charge between £1k and £1200 for a full shoot and you would get a very good job done. Obviously a definate price couldnt be arranged without seein the car but that is a good guideline to go on.
Jacko on here also does bodywork and painting for a lot of RS's all over the country so maybe he would be worth a call. Or www.blueovalgarages.com is his website.
We are both in the North East, Im in Sunderland and Jacko in Teeside.

Its all in the prep... the longer spent prepping the body the more you will pay.
BUT
Remember if you go to a body shop that specialises in insurance work the hourly rate is screwed down by the insurance companies to between £25-£28 per hour.
I recently went to a couple of classic car specialists to get my Anglia van painted and they both quoted £3k working on a much higher hourly rate as they arent governed by insurance companies and can get away with charging £35-40 an hour.
If you intend to keep the car then its worth spending the money as cheap jobs show through very quickly.
At least with a proper job it should last.

Ive had the rear side of mine resprayed after a keymark -
It's now got rust coming through GRRR!
Not sure how much it will cost - but I'm feeling a full respray - inside and out from Robbo that Diva/Sticky use.
