Nothing special from memory.
something along the lines of ;
Dear Sir/Madam.
Enclosed is a copy of my CV for your viewing,
i look forward to hearing from you in response to my application.
Yours sincerely

the main information was obviously in my CV, so the covering letter doesn't need much at all.....

it is important to have an equally good covering letter to convince the employer to look closely at your carefully crafted CV.
The covering letter is the personalising of the approach to different companies. It will relate to the specific of the prospective employer. Each covering letter you send should be different. It is important to spend time making sure your covering letter is relevant to the recipient.
Make use of your careers service, trade journals, newspapers and other resources to obtain pertinent information about the company you are applying to. If information is scant you must make an educated guess about what skills and experience are likely to be relevant to the employer.
Covering letters should typically cover the following areas:
o Address your letter to the person with whom you want to be interviewed.
o Say what you're applying for and how you come to be applying(through job advert, etc).
o Highlight particular skills in your CV of relevance- ensuring they match up to the requirements of the position.
o Say something about the company and why you are applying to them.
o Specify your availability for interview.
o As with your CV the letter should be brief (no more than one side), relevant, easy to read, with the spelling and grammar carefully checked.
o Try to ensure the letter is on good quality paper.

The main point of a covering letter is to tell the employer what job you are applying for.
Simple as that.
Many companies will have more than one job going at any one time.
Basic details, name address and contact details and explain the job you are applying for and where you have seen the advert.
DONE.

Not really no, as you are applying for the position of Sky fitter - so they don't give a fuck if you know how to tune in TV's or connect DVD players - you'll be fixing dishes to the sides of walls/chimney breasts etc and working with a Sky/Sky+/SkyHD box is all.

20K+ Super Poster.
justging by the guys that fitted my Sky+, as long as have the ability to actually write the covering letter and spell some of the words right, it'll do...
also as youre applying toa big company where the thing will just be opened by a HR department or similar and put on file, it wont mean shit, if it was going to someone who would actually read the letter and has any input in the recruitment process, it might be different.
