E46 is a GREAT GREAT car.... but the engine needs to be worked VERY hard to go fast I found. But overall I did love it very very very much....
Stu (polly x on here) took me out in his RS4 at Bedford and it was AMAZING!
M3 looks better to me... but the Turbo engine in the Audi was far better in my opinion and its MUCH cooler than the M3 to most people and more practical...
Both amazingly good cars though.

Both stunning cars!
and one is much rarer and to people REALLY into cars perhaps much cooler!
Like it or not... M3's have a laughable crap image to some people (doesn't bother me! I loved mine!)
Loved the Power delivary of the Stu's Audi... Grunty and fast and a real classy engine. 4wd and an estate as well!!! wish is either a good thing or a bad thing!
I found the M3 engine a bit too 'thrashy' to be honest. They go well though above 100mph thats for sure!

I love fast estates more than anyone. If I had a new RS4 where you've got a choice of bodystyles, the only one I'd choose would be the Avant. And the only E60-series M5 I'd have would be the Touring
But the E46 M3 is a great car, and I couldn't give a stuff about the image of any car, whether it's "Tosser", "Chav", "Grandad" or whatever...

I never found the old RS4 all that special to be honest...

The RS4 is good, I won't deny it, but I'd go for the M3 everytime myself. The RS4 just didn't really "grab" me personally. The M3 would have been the car I bought last year were it not for ridiculous insurance quotes compared the Monaro which was worth £7-£8k more and the same insurance group. But that car vastly exceeded all expectations anyway, and I'm happy

dont know much about the old RS4, but iirc the newer RS4 was built with one of it's goals being "to be better than the E46 M3" and i beleive audi acheived that quite well.

RS4 rarer, faster (in a straight line), and more tuneable.
More stylish and far less common than the rep mobile of today.
RS, RS, RS.
The only other car I would have bought in the place of my M5.

cossiep, thats the new RS4 not the old one.
and dan, thw RS4 isn't really an M5 competetor tho to be fair, thats kinda what the RS6 is all about, again audi going "oi, designers! build a better car than the M5"

Basically in standard form.......The RS4 was built as a direct competitor to the M3, and the RS6 was/is a natural competitor to the M5. Both Audi and BMW are very aware of each others products and both try to keep one step ahead.......which is great for us petrol heads.
RS 4 is faster in a straight line and on the twisty bits (4 wheel drive remember)....than an M3, but not as fast as an E39 M5.
The advantage if the RS4 is that it's more tunable......same basics as the Cosworth, Bigger Injectors, Turn up the boost........and it's a very exciting car. The M3 on the other hand is a fantastic engine, but without putting on a supercharger/turbo, it's going to cost alot to get any decent power increase from it. It's already very well tuned by BMW M Sport. From what I've read, the drive train on the RS4 is capable of handling quite an increase in power with no major modifications needed (Maybe a better clutch wouldn't go amis). Seen a few doing track days at Goodwood that reputedly had well over 400bhp and went like stink.
At the end of the day, they're both great cars, and it's really down to what you want from either of them.

Im still inclined to go with my original choice of RS4, it will be a car for me to use as a "daily driver" although for local trips Ill just use my Transit for economy. And the Cossie will be my thrash about toy once its built.
I do like to drive at a decent pace and to now have never had the pleasure of owning a 4wd performance car. Im not a straight liner, bends are where its at for me, so Id like to think the RS4 will impress me.

Dont get me wrong, I do like the M3 as well and think the SMG II box is just brilliant but as an everyday car the Audi gets the vote.

You can have a go on the 11th you fanny.
The standard RS4 is very good.
A modified one is awesome.
I have never raced an M3 in mine, as a race usually cosists of two or more prople. This 'race' was pretty much me on my own, with an M3 as like a spectator.

I'd be happy to take up that challenge on the nurburgring - shame I wont be there this time. Cup tyres and I expect we can go below 8 mins no issues in the m3 - would make for a good in car video (breaking about 12 rules in that paragraph alone lol)
Both are awesome cars.

Anyway StevenRW, I fear that whilst my RS4 is as awesome as it is, I fear the one thing that would let it down at the Ring, would be my talents. I have no doubt that I pushed my Cossy to the limits on the ring, and for what it is, I was truly impressed. However, this trip will be a complete learning curve, as whilst the handling characteristics are extremely similar to the Cossy, 4wd, same suspension set up etc etc, the extra 200+bhp and the potential entry speeds to the corners will take some getting used to. 2ndly the car at 100mph feels like the Cossy does at 40mph, so I need to concentrate extremely hard. I think it will not take long to get to grips with the slight weight increase, and I'll be quite happy to get down to mid 8's, but as I said, my talents have a limit!!

Lovely car mate but yours don't look 'standard' to me
