Default top mount or front mount intercoolers

if you had the choice, btw i couldnt give a monkeys toss about the looks of the vehicle at all

anyway what would be a better location for a intercooler, cossies ect have front mounts ect

im thinking of either a larger top mount OR a front mount but cant decide whats better from a everyday car point of view

Of course a front mount is a better location for an IC.

Thats like asking where is the better place for this block of concrete, as part of a house, or roughly inserted in to your anus.

as above, front mount passeS loads of air through once you get moving - top mount soaks loads of heat up from the engine, supposed to be an interCOOLER not interWARMER

Of course you then get into getting air to the top mount cooler...

Like on early subarus where aerodynamics meant that air just went over the scoop at over 140mph and not down it lol...

they fit it as they work fine at certain power levels and makes things easier, cheaper, and more compact.
they had no need to go need to go for a front mount at those power levels etc.

but simple fact is the same IC front mounted would work better.

pipework to fit will come with the kit, and you wont notice a difference in response etc.

Front mount will have better air flow imo, top mount looks a bit odd as in the scooby doos

AS Steve said.

Also think basic physics. What does heat do? Rse, and what does an engine creat a shit load of? Heat. So fighting battle really and hence not that efficent. Only reason to do it is as Steve said, space constraints or manufacturing costs.

What about a V mount(horizontal).....think you'll be struggling for space though and the design of the front end/bonnet would be crucial to it functioning at a reasonable level.

I'd deffo go front mount if you want to change it anyway.. they are sooo cheap now too for the Jap stuff.

I've got a front mount on my GTi-R (as you may know the std cars have a large top mounted cooler, literally right over the engine!)

A lot of the GTi-R boys like the uprated ARC top mounted coolers but I really don't see the point. They always cry LAG! but I've had a few GTi-R's and with the front mount fitted it's hardly noticeable, it far outweighs the negative effects of heat soak and wooly performance after a few mins of spirited driving and stops.

The Impreza's top mount isn't in too bad a location compared to the GTi-R but it's still not ideal. If you're going to look for an uprated cooler then go for a front mount. The point Will raised about high speed and missing the intercooler is a valid point too.

how often are you going to 140 + in it? almost never i would say

have you got a scooby then ginge? what are you going to do with it? if it's just track work, don't bother wasting money uprating things like engine performance (although a front mount i/c is a good upgrade if you will be doing track days in summer). keep it relatively std and spend money on good suspension, brakes and tyres
