you mean 0psi? about 1 second i would imagine before it knocks the bearings out. although it would still run for a bit

I would say a LOT longer than you think if you mean a basic engine (ie not some turbo nutter bastard thing), ie minutes at least that it would still actually run, potentially even hours.

BUT the damage would be done in a matter of seconds that would then kill the engine even if you got pressure back.

I remember reading an old fast ford iirc where thieves stole a s1 and drained the oil then 7 miles later it siezed.

Lets put it this way, from memory the oil light on the dash of a cossie comes on a 5psi of oil pressure. IF you see that light when driving its already too late.

God yeah, the shells would grip the crank in no time at all without oil to lubricate them, at this point they would start spinning in the rods (and mains not long after)

This would fuck the rods, bearings, block, crank

Its BAD news if you have no oil pressure under load for more than a couple of seconds (its not instant as the oil is still on the crank at the time the pressure stops).

Possibly to see what would happen, or possibly they drained it by whacking the sump on something, thats how I last drained my oil without meaning to on a car!

Just the way it was worded, as if they did it deliberately?!

Sod wacking it, surely you would check first after thumping the underneath so hard

In my case I did check, and had cracked the sump, so I turned it off BEFORE it lost oil pressure, as I cared about the car.

In the case of a stolen car though, why would they care?

To make money out of the car they just stolen?

Once the oil light has flashed on the damage indeed has been done, but surely the car if stopped and shut down immediately and the problem rectified the engine should still see many many more miles???

FROM PERSONALL EXPERIENCE!!!!!

my car did approxamatly 55 miles with absolutly 0 oil pressures as the bolt came off the cog which supplied the drive to the oil pump on the 24V lump

and that was pootling about

the crank was survived this ordeal but most of the bearings were fubar, so i'm glad i didn't drive it up the motorway

all the while i was thinking that i hadn't connected the oil pressure gauge up correctly

Did you do much damage? Or did you notice instantly?

I did no damage at all, as I turned the engine off before any significant amount of oil had leaked through the crack, so the oil pickup pipe never say any air while the engine was running.

when we got rid of the drift shitter i had the engine running up to temp, and after several big handfulls of gravel down the inlet it started to run a bit rough, so i drained the water and oil, it ran for a good 10 mins at part throttle before it siezed lol

i was hoping for a more spectacular scenario, but it just stopped lol

Bit more thinking out loud then. What would be a sensible level to set a oil pressure warning light too on a YB then?

20psi, anything less than that and it will come on at idle.

why not just run a raffle at this years ford fair to see how long an engine will run before it seises when you rev the nuts off ot it with no oil

just like they used to do at the middx owners club show a few years back

a fiesta lasted more than 2 minutes
