Zetec by a mile. Smoother newer more responsive engine. Cheaply upgraded to rs1800 spec. More potential for tuning N/A wise i would have thought aswell.

The Zetec car is more refined and slightly better looking.
The CVH is a bit rougher round the edges, but easier/cheaper to tune.
Both cars have their pro's and con's. I'd go for the 16V myself, but then I'm used to owning a Zetec.

nothing wrong with the cvh lump, good pionts for both engines as there is bad,
wife has a zetec in her 3i, revs a bit better but nowhere near as fast as my FRST, but then mines turbo

CVH every time unless I was gonna stick a 2.0l in it.
Took Rachels 2i to Alconbury for a Fiesta thrash and back then it was sporting nothing more in the power mods than a Magnex back box and a K&N induction kit and we beat an RS1800 Fiesta up the back straight on every lap. We didn't roast the RS1800 but we had sufficient torque and power to keep it behind us.
Rachel's 2i was also very sweet sounding and didn't rattle at all as anybody from this board that saw it can testify. CVH's tend to sound crap when they aren't looked after.

My daily driver is a CVH XR2i, it has done 149,000 miles and dont smoke at all, i did buy it with a full ford service history with Ł2K of reciepts from a 1 lady owner.
Oh and i paid Ł400.00 because ford quoted her Ł290.00 for a clutch because it has ABS, clutch cost me Ł49.00

I would say that the CVH has better pick-up in 1st gear in general than an 1800 zetec but the zetec has a far better drive and top-end.

Surely the Zetec is a better engine as its alot newer than the old CVH?
In terms of car its hard to say as in some examples they both rust like f*ck!
