gonna join a gym, how much commitment to start bodybuilding
Gonna join a gym somewhere near work soon, and plan to go a few lunchtimes per week, (i used to work out 4 times a week a few yrs ago, so have no probs going 4 odd times a week) anyways, i am just deciding what i want to get out of this, and wondered if anyone knew what sort of commitment was required in order to start bodybuilding, i mean seriously, would 1hr per day 4 days a week be enuff to start? or would it require more? cos it takes 2hrs to get to work and 2hrs home again its just not possible to do much at the evenings, which is why i am having probs with the equipment in the garage,
cheers for any help

depending on ur workout ie if u spent most of ur time sittin around talkin and fookin about or if u work ur ass off and have next 2 no breaks.
if u work out for anymore then 40mins solid per session ur doin to much. and thats from some of the biggist fookers at the gym. but if u wonna go mad and b like mr olympia then u'll need to workout like 6 days aweek at least 2hrs a day (broken up of course)

I was going to the gym 3 times a week for a bout 1.5 to 2 hrs a session. Gaining no body weight as such as I wasn't eating enough. i stepped up the eating and put a stone and a half on in about 2 months. I work low reps, heavy weights, compound.
used to do hi reps but the aim at the moment is to gain body weight then I'll try some hi reps for next!

bodybuilding is more of a lifestyle than a hobby.. You'll need to eat 2g of protein per pound of bodyweight everyday...You need to plan meals.
Training in lunchtimes is unadvisable..you should be eating then!
seriously though, take it easy to start off with..beginners build muscle very easily for the first few months.

What about if you use your muscles alot during the day? would training still show results? i handload steel for 10 hours a day and i've got used to it now, have noticed a considerable difference in my strength and a slight increas in size, would training after work be over working the muscles or will it be ok?

You probably eat a lot already yeah? Food builds muscles thats the key.
you might not get the gains of a non labouring type person but it will sure refine what you already have.
I'm no expert though.

i do have a bit of energy left as i've got used to it now, but i wont be going to the gym, thinking about a simple home setup, i feel more relaxed at home and it would make it easier to stick with it, now the winters here i dont fancy going out in the shite weather to go to the gym every night!

that will do nothing for muscle size mate, it will increase strength, but unfortunatley you need a more scientific approach to build muscle, also you cannot train the same muscles everyday as this will have a negative effect on them, what you are doing is improving tendon strength a little and keeping you fit nothing more.

Gra, haven't read the other posts, but I've been training for over 10 years at varying levels of intensity. I have never trained more than 4 x 60mins for more than a couple of weeks in a row, and most of the time 3x 60mins is the time spent in the gym. With bodybuilding it becomes a lifestyle and it takes more commitment and concentration outside of the gym than in. You need to make sure you are getting enough of the right food at the right time and enough rest. This is when you grow!, not when you are in the gym.
After a while it will become second nature, and as I advised Lewis, make small changes at first otherwise it will be too much of a shock and you could give up.
Don't waste money on any drugs at first either. Yes they work, but my advice is to get to know your body first and build up a solid foundation naturally. I am 5'7" and got to 15.5 stone naturally before I went on the gear. I then went upto 18st and had 20" arms . I then had testicular cancer(read into this what you will regarding drug use!), I dropped back to 15.5 stone and then levelled out back to 17st. Since then I've trimmed down further to 16st and haven't touched the gear for 6 years. This show's that building a solid natural base is the way forward
It can get a little extreme if you are not careful. I used to get up in the middle of the night for protein drinks etc and have heard pros tell stories of picking desicated liver tablets out of their own puke and re-eating them again, coz they've thrown up on a leg sessions You do not need to go to these extremes!! After all it should be enjoyable and you should take pleasure in being able to ttrain and eat consistently resulting in you changing the way you look.
Hope this helps
Paul.
