PIC req, Rear mounted Radiators-rallycross,time attack etc
Does anybody have some good pictures showing rear mounted rad set ups, I have ideas on what I would do but would like to compare my own thoughts with what others have actually done and used.
Rally cross, Jap time attack cars and possibly some of the wilder touring cars (thunder saloons) would be the kind of things i'm looking for.
any help apprieciated.

Thanks for those,
Its not normally a mod we'd go for but the car we are building would benefit as it gives us alot more room at the front for intercooler cooling.
I'm getting bored of google now!!

[quote="Dan@FastFord"]this is the only pic i have of pat dorans
all i know is that they must be 100% enclosed and have good air feeds going in - pats were roof/rear quarter mounted naca ducts
quote]
This is correct but there is also formula's for calculating the correct size required before and after the rad to maintain airflow, I dont want to turn it into a built in parachute create aerodynamic drag.

The silver Escort that used to be Stian's was complaining of over-heating issues (or rather I should say, using that as an excuse for his lack of straightline performance compared to the UK cars that went over to Gatebil ), so maybe not such a great idea?
As has been said, it has to be absolutely perfect to get a good result, so will no doubt take lots of experimenting.

Here is the link to the thread i started - lots of good tech bits here, but as yet no info from anyone that has actually built and used that set-up.
I would say though that from the look of Stians car it flowed better, Liefs set up looks differnt and at Gatebil he was running with the rear quarter windows out to try and force air in..
It must be in sealed enclusure with air scooping in from underneath and out the back, The ducting on windows will draw the air in under vacum effect when the vehicle is moving and also allow hot air to escape when stationary.

looks like lots of testing then starting with my own ideas as the base line. one major problem is the slow speed cooling as generally the design is for maximum speed conditions in hope that at lower speed the cooling needs will drop faster than the cooling ability of the system.

I think you will need to rely on the cooling of the fans at standstill, they will need to be big as possible and hopefully draw through some clean air, if its sealed nicely this should work...
Not going to know, until you try, but im very interested so keep us all uptodate

In what way mate?
Basically they 2 of the fastest Time Attack cars in Japan, big power track cars with rear mounted rads.
On that note, heres another, shows the rear mounted rad quite well at the start, and the rest of a vid is just awesome in a fucking mentally fast car way.

Heres my attempt (although pics may already be in the linked thread above) which is not yet 100% finished - i've only mocked it up in MDF so far - when I know it works, i'll redo it in Alluminium:
Still a work in progress - got to cut the boot floor so i can get the carbon fibre windage tray fixed and vented. Principle is that the air will be 'sucked' through the rad rather than forced.
But its a bit of trial and error.

Testing the future
Bomber i can't see that working well at all the 2 ducts are far too small and any air coming through them will just go straight through that area of the rad core creating very localised cooling whereas you want uniform airflow through the entire core

you'll notice that the jap cars are completely vented and open at the rear ! both Pats car and Dermot carnegies cars suffered very badly with excess heat , Dermots is now un enclosed and sees a greater reduction , i suggest that you have a word with julian godfrey for the definitve word on this as i know theyve got it right now .

I think the last time Dave spoke to the Norway crew about this, they said that mounting it in the floor and ducting air down to it there worked better that having virtical in the back.
