Default Well my luck has finally come to an end

The big power CVH has finally given in.

I use the S2 everyday, and this engine has done over 60k miles. Although its never been tracked, its seen plenty of abuse in it's time, with plenty of 150mph + runs and over 2 bar of boost to 7400rpm. It costs me next to nothing to run, oil changes every 4k or so, petrol and that's about it.

Last night i was giving it some on a dual carriage way, when i heard a clattering sound. Thought it was the gearbox, but then realised i had no power. I coasted to halt, and when i tried to start, it sounded like it had no compression. Opened the bonnet expecting a snapped cam belt, but all looked well. No oil, no blown oil cap, all normal.

This morning, pulled the head off, and i've droped number 2 exhaust valve This has always been my biggest worry with the engine - rightly so it seems. The valves are huge, the weight and off them coupled to fatigue etc eventually kills them. Tim's done them, i remeber when RW's old car did one, plus a good few others - it's the CVH's biggest weak point.

When Karl did the head for me, he suggested getting the valves ceramic coated - i did, but it seems that after 60k it's given up.

Not sure what to do now - the head is probably repairable, but the pistons are Cosworth Racing and aren't available anymore. The piston hasn't holed, but looks pretty molten.

Bit gutted,. but she's done well..

Ive done similar, proper carnage, yours actually looks like the bore hasnt been fucked though, not that its much consilation!

Moral of the story is pull the head off every 30K and replace the valves I guess, LOL

Lol. no thanks mate

It was very economical, cruised at 15.5, did 30+mpg round town... Think it will be more sensible to build a zetec now, the parts are cheap as from the states.

If you must stay with the inherently bad design of the escort, then yes a Zetec sounds like a good plan.

They are fine Dan.

And zetec valves are a lot lighter than CVH ones as they are TINY by comparison.

Gutted mate, been there myself about 12 months ago...

After the valve dropped it sat round the back of my work's for 6 months before I could gather the enthusiasm to repair it.

Running fine now, get some bits ordered and get it back on the road
