Default Tips: removing a cross threaded glow plug with a rounded nut

Ford Escort TD (endura)

no. 3 glow plug is cross threaded (not by me). I managed to get it about half way out before I rounded off the nut on the plug.

Bit of a school boy error in that I used a 12 point socket rather than a 5/6 point one.

Any ideas what I can do to get it out?

Can you not get on it with a 6 point one?

tried that, ended up snapping the welds on the grips from trying to get the grips tightened up enough.

take the head off and take it to a shop
if you've crossed the threads at some point it might not be as clean a job to remove it and you might have got some shit down into the bores

we had a 300 td merc in a few months ago and the glow plug striped it's threads on the way out
it totaly fucked the piston as bits if the thread mashed themselves into the crown and the chamber where the valves sat was all fucked as well

with a bit of heat everything came apart and all it needed was a new piston, but there was blow torching to buggery going on with that head to heat it up enough to get the plug out and then we had to get it checked to see if it had warped or not

If its badly rounded use a 6 sided socket the next size down
obv make sure you whack it on hard b4 you try to undo.

find a sacrifical socket you can heat up
then sitck it onto the end of a sacrificial extension and heat teh fucker till it gets hot
then whack it onto the end of the plug
the heat will let it warp a little bit so that it will fit better
then let it cool down a bit so it compresses itself onto the nremenants of the nut
they try
if all else fails, buy another car

fpmsl! cheers guys! only had the car a month so thats an expensive glow plug!

it runs fine half way out (just misses a bit for the first 10 - 15 seconds when its really cold) and as its a run around until I sold my BM im tempted to just leave it!

I did try the smaller socket job but couldnt get the angle to get it on properly.
