Default Anyone thinking of importing car parts......

I know this isn't news to everyone, but to those that think that they won't get hit for taxes if they bring bits in from abroad, I just wanted to let you know that you might.

I brought a Tubular Manifold for the RST from America, back in May and I have just this morning had a bill for the taxes!!

I'm not that bothered, as it was cheap anyway, but it's almost 5 months ago!! It wasn't like it was a new item from a proper business either. I bought it from Ebay!!

I would have thought that you would have had to pay the tax to get the item released from customs?

How can they get you to pay so far down the line?

Usually around 3% Import tax, then VAT at 17.5% on the total.

So, Ł1000 becomes closer to Ł1250.

Kinda takes the shine off it, doesn't it!!??!!

Ask the company sending it to mark it up as "industrial/ business samples". Don't get charged import duty then

That's OK as long as.....

1. They are happy to do it (more and more companies these days won't)

2. It doesn't get cross-checked. They have all the Ebay paperwork to go with mine and can see what I paid etc.

There are all kinds of scenario's for circumventing Customs charges and they do often work, but it's not guaranteed and I imagine that someone could end up in court if found out as a Customs Declaration will have to have been signed.
